Who is Naveen Jindal

Industrialist Naveen Jindal is considered a significant business player not only in Haryana but all of India. The youngest son of industrialist Om Prakash Jindal, Naveen was born in 1970. Also a champion of women empowerment, he now heads Jindal Steel and Power Limited and O P Jindal university. For 2006, World Economic Forum included Naveen Jindal as one of the top 25 Indians on the annual list of 250 global young leaders.

A member of the Congress party, Jindal was also an active politician and represented the Kurukshetra constituency in the Lok Sabha for two terms (2004-2014). However, he lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Raj Kumar Saini in the 2014 national elections and was not fielded by the Congress in 2019.

Jindal’s tryst with politics came at an early age. He was actively involved in student movements, went on to become the president of the student union at the University of Texas. After post-graduation in the US, Jindal returned to India and aided his father in political matters. Fast forward to 2004, Jindal was the Congress candidate fighting Lok Sabha polls from the prestigious Kurukshetra constituency in Haryana. He won the seat in that election and the one that followed.

Naveen Jindal moved a private member Bill for a comprehensive Food and Nutrition Security Scheme which became the basis for the Food Security Act. Also, it was after Jindal’s continuous efforts and prolonged commitment to the issue that got Indian citizens the right to fly the national flag on all days. It was in Jindal’s case on the subject that the Supreme Court of India ruled in a landmark judgment in 2004 that every Indian had the right to fly the tricolour.

Jindal had his fair share of controversies, too — from allegations of involvement in 2012 Colgate scam to undue preferences in mining allocations to his companies.
