Who is Krishna Ella?

Krishna Ella is an Indian scientist and is the founder, chairman, and managing director of Bharat Biotech. Ella's company Bharat Biotech has developed India's first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin.
 
Life and Education
 
Krishna Ella was born in 1969 in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur. He did his bachelor's from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and obtained Master's degree from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. He completed his master's from the University of Hawaii on a Rotary fellowship. He has attained a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
 
Ella is married to Shucitra Ella, and the couple has one son together.
 
Career
 
Ella started his career with Bayer, a pharmaceutical and life sciences company but left it to pursue higher education in the US.  
 
He suggested Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu in 1996 to set up a biotech knowledge park, which is now called Genome Valley.
 
After returning to India, he set up Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad in 1999.
 
Bharat Biotech launched a preservative-free vaccine (Revac-B mcf Hepatitis B Vaccine), the first company to do so. It also launched India’s first cell-cultured Swine Flu vaccine.
 
Ella's company launched the Hepatitis B vaccine in 1999, at Rs 10 per dose in 1999. Bharat Biotech manufactures the world's cheapest Hepatitis vaccine. It is also the first pharmaceutical company in the world to find vaccines for the Zika virus.
 
Bharat Biotech also developed India's first indigenous vaccine for coronavirus, Covaxin.
 
Krishna Ella and his wife Suchitra Ella were conferred Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, in January 2022.
