Who is King Charles III?
King Charles III, previously known as Prince Charles, is the new monarch of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth nations following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022. He was born on November 14, 1948, as Charles Philip Arthur George, the Prince of Wales, was the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. According to media reports, King Charles III is likely to be officially proclaimed King on Saturday, at James's Palace in London, in front of a ceremonial body known as the Accession Council. Gun salutes will be fired in Hyde Park, the Tower of London, and from naval ships.
Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1953, and her son was present at her coronation. As Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay, he was the longest-serving and oldest heir apparent in British history.
King Charles III was sent to study at the Hill House school in West London after the Queen, and Prince Philip decided to send him to school instead of having a private tutor. In 1967, he went to Cambridge University to study archaeology and anthropology at Trinity College.
In a colourful ceremony in 1969, King Charles III was invested as the Prince of Wales by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. In 1970, he took a seat in the House of Lords.
King Charles III served in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. It was in March 1971 that Charles flew himself to the Royal Air Force College Cranwell to train as a jet pilot. Following his training as a jet pilot, he embarked on a naval career and enrolled in a six-week course at the Royal Navy College Dartmouth. He then served on the guided missile destroyer HMS Norfolk and two frigates.
On July 29, 1981, the Prince of Wales married Lady Diana Spencer, and the couple had two sons, Prince Williams, and Prince Harry. Their marriage was, however, dissolved in 1996, and a year later, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris.
King Charles III remarried in 2005 to Camilla Parker Bowles, who eventually became the Duchess of Cornwall and will now be known as Queen consort of the United Kingdom.
