Who is Jagdeep Dhankhar?
Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 16 was named as the National Democratic Alliance candidate for Vice-President by the Bharatiya Janata Party President Jagat Prakash Nadda. He was formally the Governor of West Bengal and is now all set to succeed Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu. Life and education Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, in a small village named Kithana in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu. He did his schooling at Sainik School in Chittorgarh. After that he completed his primary and middle school education at Kithana Government School and Ghardhana Government School, respectively The 71-year-old is a Bachelor of Science graduate from the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur. He also completed his LLB from the same university. Dhankhar is married to Sudesh Dhankhar since 1979 and the couple has a daughter together. Career Jagdeep Dhankhar started his career as an advocate in 1979 at the Bar Council of Rajasthan. He became a Senior Advocate, designated by the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan in 1990. He was the senior-most designated Senior Advocate of the state till he became Bengal's Governor in 2019. He practised in the Supreme Court from 1990 and appeared in various high courts of India. He has also served as the President of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association. The 71-year-old forayed into politics in 1989 and was elected to the Lok Sabha on Janata Dal's ticket from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. He became a Union Minister in 1990 as he served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar ministry. From 1993 to 1998, Dhankhar was also a member of the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha from the Kishangarh constituency. He was appointed governor of West Bengal in July 2019 and had a tumultuous relationship with the ruling Trinamool Congress in the state during his tenure. Dhankhar resigned from his post on July 17, 2022, after he was named NDA's candidate for the Vice Presidential election.
