North East Delhi Parliamentary Constituency
The capital's North East Delhi Lok Sabha seat is presently quite popular as the Congress has fielded ex-JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar against BJP's incumbent MP and popular Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari. The Parliamentary constituency has a large number of migrants from eastern UP and Bihar and therefore, both the parties have banked on faces with origin from this region.
In 2019 LS polls, Manoj Tiwari defeated Congress stalwart and Delhi's ex-CM Sheila Dikshit by a margin of over 3.5 lakh votes. However, this time the contest is likely to be more intense as unlike in 2019, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is not fielding a candidate on this seat as they are in an alliance with the Grand Old Party.
Notably, the North East Delhi LS seat came into existence only in the 2009 General Elections in which Congress candidate JP Agarwal won by a margin of over 2 lakh votes. However, in the next two elections, Tiwari won quite comprehensively.
Interestingly, in spite of BJP dominating the LS polls, it was AAP who won the majority of the Assembly segments falling under this Parliamentary constituency during the 2020 Assembly polls. Notably, 10 Assemblies fall under North East Delhi LS seat and AAP won seven of them with BJP winning the remaining ones.
Kanhaiya is an excellent orator and has a good connect with the youths and people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, Tiwari has the backing of a robust BJP organisation at the ground level and has been involved in Delhi politics for over a decade now.
The infamous 2020 Delhi riots took place primarily in the Assembly segments of North East Delhi LS seat in which several people lost their lives. The riots occurred just a few weeks after the results of the 2020 Delhi Assembly polls were declared in which AAP won 62 out of the total 70 seats.
