Delhi government presents outcome budget; here are some key takeaways

A majority of schemes under the Women and Child Development Department are on track, according to the Delhi government's Outcome Budget for 2022-23 presented in the Assembly on Monday. Out of 63 indicators for assessment, 71 per cent were on track, it said, adding that last year, out of 69 indicators for assessment, 80 per cent were on track. About 3.47 lakh women in distress was given monthly financial assistance in 2022-23 against 3.12 lakh women in distress in 2021-22, it said. About 2,060 poor widows were given financial assistance (Rs 30,000) for marriage of their daughters. As many as 31,743 girls were enrolled (at birth stage + school stage) under the Ladli scheme till December 2022. The report also said that 21,336 maturity cases have been paid till the third quarter of year 2022-23. Intensive operation to clean Yamuna floodplains to be launched on Thursday

An intensive operation to clean the Yamuna floodplains, involving territorial army personnel, will be launched by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Thursday, the Raj Niwas said in a statement. A 94-member company of the territorial army will be drafted to ensure ground level enforcement and monitoring of all untrapped drains and sub-drains that pollute the river, it said. The Lt Governor heads a high-level committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in January to oversee implementation of its orders with regard to cleaning of the Yamuna.

NGT forms high-level committee to deal with pollution in Yamuna river

The National Green Tribunal on Monday formed a high-level committee to deal with the issue of pollution in Yamuna river. A bench comprising its chairperson Justice A K Goel said substantial work remains unexecuted in terms of identified steps for the rejuvenation of Yamuna, and there is still a huge gap between the generation of sewage and available treatment facilities. The bench also comprising judicial members Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi along with expert members A Senthil Vel and Afroz Ahmad said the earlier directions of the tribunal regarding pollution of river Yamuna were not complied with. Delhi govt working on war footing to clean Yamuna by Feb 2025: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said his government is working on a war footing on a six-point action plan to clean the Yamuna by February 2025. The chief minister said he will deliver on the promise he made before the 2019 Assembly polls to clean the Delhi stretch of the river. "It took the Yamuna 70 years to become so polluted. The damage done in 70 years cannot be undone in just two days. I had made a promise that I will clean the Yamuna (in Delhi) by the next Assembly polls and will take a dip in it along with all of you," he said at a press conference.
