Conservative groups look beyond ex-President Trump for 2024 GOP nominee

Two major conservative groups have signalled they are open to supporting someone other than Donald Trump in the 2024 race for the White House, the latest sign from an increasingly vocal segment of the Republican Party that it's time to move on from the former president. David McIntosh, the president of the influential Club For Growth group, said Tuesday that the group has invited a half dozen potential Republican candidates to its donor summit in Florida next month, but Trump the only declared major candidate in the race so far is not among them. Instead, the group has invited Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is viewed as Trump's most formidable likely challenger, along with Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador; former Vice President Mike Pence; former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina; and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin. "We think it would be great for our members to hear them, see what they have to say, where th

Biden to talk about his economic successes in State of the Union Address

In his State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress, US President Joe Biden will highlight the key economic policies of his administration that have helped in not only creating jobs but also strengthening the country's economy. The president is hoping to do two things broadly when it comes to the economy in the State of the Union, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese told reporters at a news conference here. Biden will deliver his second State of the Union Address before a joint session of the Congress on Tuesday night. The first is to put the progress that we have made economically back into the broader frame that really compelled him to run for president in the first place. That broader frame around what it actually means to pursue what he refers to as a middle out, bottom-up economic strategy and make a clear contrast to the trickle down economic philosophy that has pervaded thinking for years and decades in the past, he said. In his address, Biden will ta

Improved surveillance helped indentify Chinese balloon: White House

US officials said Monday that improvements ordered by President Joe Biden to strengthen defences against Chinese espionage helped identify last week's spy balloon and determine that similar flights were conducted at multiple points during the Trump administration. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday that after Biden took office, the U.S. enhanced our surveillance of our territorial airspace, we enhanced our capacity to be able to detect things that the Trump administration was unable to detect. Speaking at the event hosted by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, Sullivan added that as part of those efforts we were able to go back and look at the historical patterns" and uncover "multiple instances during the Trump administration in which Chinese surveillance balloons traversed American airspace and territory. Several Trump administration officials have have said they didn't learn of Chinese surveillance balloons during their tenures. Before Monday, U.S

Biden believes iCET key for US, India to create technology ecosystem

US President Joe Biden believes that the India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies, or iCET, is key for the two countries to create a democratic technology ecosystem, the White House has said. iCET, which is being billed as the Next Big Thing in the India-US relationship, was launched by national security advisors Jake Sullivan from the US and Ajit K Doval from India at the White House here on Tuesday. The President believes this initiative is key for the US and India to create a democratic technology ecosystem and reinforces our democratic values and our democratic institutions. So, we see this as an incredibly important initiative and a partnership that we have with India, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference. iCET was being launched at the direction of Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who after their Tokyo meeting in May 2022 had announced to elevate and expand the strategic technology partnership and ...

Donald Trump's return to Facebook could be major fundraising boost

The decision by Facebook's parent company to soon reinstate Donald Trump's account comes at a critical moment for the former president as he tries to build campaign momentum for a return to the White House. Reclaiming his social media megaphone could open an important new stream of revenue for the 2024 contest's only declared candidate, whose campaign has faced criticism for its lackluster launch. Trump is considering a return to Twitter, as well, rejoining both of the social media giants that he used to great effect to widely and personally connect with his supporters in previous campaigning. He was banned from posting on both Facebook and Twitter, along with other social media sites, for his role in inciting violence in the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. In considering a return to the platforms that shunned him, Trump is essentially recognising that the social media company he launched last year, Truth Social, pales in comparison to the reach of the ...

Biden understands first-hand impact layoff can have on family: White House

US President Joe Biden understands first-hand the crushing impact of losing a job can have on a family, the White House has said, amid the massive layoffs by major tech companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook that have rendered thousands of Indian-American IT professionals jobless. On January 20, Google axed 12,000 jobs across the globe, its CEO Sundar Pichai announced, becoming the latest tech giant after Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon to retrench staff en mass amid the global economic downturn. Last week, Microsoft announced 10,000 job cuts, or nearly 5 per cent of its workforce. Amazon is also cutting 18,000 jobs and Facebook parent Meta was trimming 11,000 positions. The bloodbath in the tech sector that began last year is continuing into 2023. The President understands first-hand how the impact of losing a job can have on a family. He understands that very personally, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on .

More classified documents found at Biden's residences: White House

More classified documents have been found at the Delaware residences of President Joe Biden, the White House said Saturday. With this the total number of classified documents found at Biden's residences in Delaware and his private office in Washington DC has increased roughly to about two dozen. The Department of Justice has appointed a special counsel to investigate into the issue. Biden, who normally spends his weekends at his Delaware residence, arrived Friday evening. The White House Special Counsel Richard Sauber in a statement on Saturday said that one classified document was found in a room adjacent to Biden's garage Wednesday night. The lawyers who discovered that document did not have security clearances and paused their search as a result, Sauber said. While I was transferring it to the DOJ officials who accompanied me, five additional pages with classification markings were discovered among the material with it, for a total of six pages. The DOJ officials with me ...

Ro Khanna's US Senate plan sparks speculation about his White House bid

Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has said that he is weighing a Senate bid in California, sparking speculation among Democrats in several key US states that he may be eyeing to run for the White House in the future, according to a media report. Those close to Khanna, 46, say he is keeping his options open ahead of a potential presidential run in 2028 or beyond. But others in his orbit are talking about an even more compressed timeline: running in 2024 if President Joe Biden, 80, decided not to, according to Politico, a political newspaper company based in Arlington County in the US. I think he would be a great United States senator, said Mark Longabaugh, a Democratic strategist whose firm did media consulting for Khanna last year. But I also think, should Biden decide not to run, I think he's a very plausible candidate for president of the United States. So I think that those decisions are yet to be made. Biden takes classified documents, information very seriously: White House

US President Joe Biden takes classified documents and information "very seriously", the White House said Thursday hours after it revealed that more classified documents were found from his residences and private offices. The Attorney General has appointed a Special Counsel, Robert Hur, to investigate the discovery of classified documents at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. and the Bidens' personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware. "It is important for the American people to know this, is that the President has said, he takes classified documents and information very seriously," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference. "This is something, as you all know, that he will not shy away from saying and has continued to say this this week. And again, he was surprised that these records have been found. "He does not know what's in them and his team, once they identified that these documents were there, they immediately reached out

US looking forward to engaging new Israeli govt, says White House

The United States is looking forward to working with the new Israeli government, the Biden administration said and asserted that it supports the normalisation of Arab-Israel relations. Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party and its far-right and religious allies secured an emphatic victory in the general elections in the Jewish nation last year defeating Yair Lapid. This is Netanyahu's sixth stint as prime minister. "We really do look forward to engaging the Israeli government. I will be going to Israel, and that will be a substantial topic of conversation when I go," US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters in New Mexico. The Biden administration, he said, will have the opportunity to engage deeply with the new Israeli government on the threat posed by Iran. "We share the same fundamental objectives. We will work through any differences we have on tactics the same way that we have over the course of the past two years," Sullivan said. "We had Prime Minister Netanyahu fo

US stands with Afghan women, condemns Taliban move, says White House

The United States stands with the women of Afghanistan and strongly condemns the recent Taliban move regarding restrictions on girls' education in the country, the White House said on Tuesday. "We stand with Afghan women and condemn the Taliban's indefensible decision to restrict women's education and their rights. So, as we have made clear, these actions by the Taliban will further alienate them from the international community and deny them the legitimacy that they so desire," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference. "We remain in touch with our partners and allies on this issue, and we'll continue to take steps to advance our shared efforts to support Afghan women and girls and provide a robust humanitarian support to the people in Afghanistan. We will be steadfast about that," she said in response to a question. Last month, the Taliban banned women from attending universities.
