: A 40-year-old woman and her 20-year-old son were"asphyxiated" to death when they burnt charcoal to beat the chilly weather at their rented room in Jubilee Hills area here early Wednesday, police said. The two had closed the door and windows of the room and burnt the charcoal apparently to keep them warm and slept Tuesday night. They got suffocated on inhaling the accumulated smoke from the charcol and died after midnight, police said. The landlord who broke open the room door found the two dead Wednesday morning, they said. The city and different districts in Telangana had been witnessing extreme cold weather and sudden fall in temperatures.

Cold wave in northwest to make Delhi colder, air quality 'very poor'

Night temperature shows improvement in Jammu

The night temperature in most parts of Jammu region marked further increase, with the city of temples recording a low of 6 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the normal during this time of the season, a spokesperson of the Meteorological (MeT) department said. Jammu city recorded season's lowest night temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius Monday, recording a fall of almost six degrees during the past week following the recent snowfall in the high altitude areas and rains in the plains. The downward trend in the minimum temperature, however, changed when the city marked a marginal increase after the night temperature settled at 5.1 degrees Celsius Tuesday. Slight respite from cold in Kashmir

People in Kashmir had some respite from the cold in Kashmir, but the minimum temperature across the Valley stayed several degrees below the freezing point, a Meteorological (MeT) official said Wednesday. The night temperature also improved slightly in Kargil town in Ladakh region which experienced the coldest night of the season Tuesday. The official said the mercury in Kargil town settled at a low of minus 14.9 degrees Celsius last night up nearly one degrees from minus 15.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. Delhi recorded season's coldest day on Tuesday with the minimum temperature plunging to 5.1 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature was recorded at 22.3 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, a MeT department official said. Humidity levels oscillated between 97 and 45 per cent. The Met office has forecast clear skies for Wednesday along with mist and shallow fog in the morning. "Clear skies with mist and shallow fog in the morning followed by haze and smoke thereafter. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 22 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively," the weatherman said. On Monday, the minimum temperature recorded was 6.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature settled at 22.1 degrees Celsius.

Light rains over eastern UP, Muzaffarnagar coldest

Very light rain was recorded at isolated places over eastern Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, while weather remained dry over the western region of the state, the Met department said. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 3.5 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Department (Met) department said. Shallow to moderate fog occurred at isolated places and the night temperature went below normal in Bareilly division on Monday, it said. Kargil in Ladakh region was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir Monday as minimum temperature dipped to minus 15.8 degree Celsius, MeT Office said Tuesday. North Maharashtra shivered as minimum temperatures dipped across the region with Dhule city being the coldest at 6.8 degree Celsius, officials said Tuesday. Nashik, the largest city in the region comprising five districts, recorded a temperature at 8.5 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours ending Monday evening. "Jalgaon, Nandurbar and Ahmednagar districts in the region also recorded low temperatures", a Met official said, adding that there would be no respite from the cold wave-like conditions for the next few days. Farmers in Nashik district, called as the Wine Capital of India, expressed apprehensions that cold weather might damage grapes.
