Higher reaches in HP get fresh snowfall, Keylong coldest at minus 7 deg C
Chill in the air persisted in Himachal Pradesh as several higher reaches in the state received fresh snowfall, Meteorological department said Saturday. The tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong has got 20 cm snow, whereas Kinnaur's Kalpa received 4 cm snow from 5.30 pm Friday to 8.30 am Saturday, the Shimla MeT Centre Director Manmohan Singh said. Gondola in Kullu district received 10.5 cm snowfall, Pooh in Kinnaur 8 cm and Kothi in Chamba district got 5 cm snowfall during the period, he said. However, no fresh snowfall occurred in Shimla on Saturday, he added. Meanwhile, Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 7 degrees Celsius, the MeT official said. Heavy snowfall cuts off Kashmir from rest of country
Kashmir was cut off fromthe rest of the country on Saturday as both surface as well as aerial connectivity to the valley was disrupted due to heavy snowfall which threw life out of gear here. Most places in Kashmir, including plains of the valley, received moderate to heavy snowfall overnight, officials of the MeT Department said. The snowfall, which began in the late afternoon on Friday, continued in most parts of the valley this morning, they said, adding it is one of the heaviest snowfalls in the recent years in the plains of Kashmir. Srinagar recorded 10 inches of snowfall till 8:30 in the morning and the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded two feet of fresh snow. While Qazigund recorded 11 inches, Kokernag three inches, Pahalgam 16 inches and Kupwara 17 inches of snow, the officials said. The Indian Meteorological Department on Friday said that a cyclonic storm, namely 'Pabuk', which has centred itself over the Gulf of Thailand, is very likely to move northwestwards and emerge into the Andaman Sea by tomorrow forenoon (January 5).On Friday morning, the cyclonic storm moved west-northwestwards from the South China Sea region and centred itself over the Gulf of Thailand, between latitude 8.3 degrees North and longitude 101.0 degrees East, about 990 km east-southeast of Port Blair. Cold day in Delhi under overcast skies
Delhi witnessed a cold day under overcast skies on Friday, with the maximum temperature being the lowest of the season and dense fog leading to cancellation of more than 50 trains and delaying few flights. The minimum temperature was 7.1 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, while the maximum settled at 18.4 degrees, a notch below the average, a meteorological department official said. As many as 55 trains were cancelled, 25 remained partially cancelled and at least 11 delayed across Northern Railways due to low visibility in the morning. Most of the affected trains were running late by two-three hours, officials said. In Palam and Safdarjung, the visibility was zero and 400 metres respectively at 5.30 am, and 50 and 400 metres at 8.30 am. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 65 per cent. Light rains, hailstorm likely in parts of Rajasthan
Light rains and hailstorm are likely to occur in western parts of Rajasthan in the next 24 hours due to upper cyclonic circulation, a MeT Department official said Friday. Eight districts -- Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Churu, Hanumangarh and Sriganganagar -- may receive rains followed by gusty winds whereas hailstorm is likely to occur in Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts, he said. The minimum temperature was recorded at 3.5 degrees Celsius in Sikar followed by 4.5 in Churu, 6.0 in Sriganganagar, 7.0 in Dabok, 7.5 in Jaipur, 8.8 in Kota, 10.2 in Ajmer, 11.7 in Jodhpur, 12.4 in Jaisalmer, 12.5 degrees Celsius in Barmer. The maximum temperature was recorded in between 17.6 and 28.1 degrees Celsius, the official said.

IMD issues alert for heavy snowfall, rain in HP from Friday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an 'orange warning' of heavy snowfall and rain in Himachal Pradesh from January 4 to 6. Keylong, the administrative centre of Lahaul and Spiti district, continues to be the coldest place in the state at minus 10.8 degrees Celsius recorded between 5.30 pm on Thursday and 8.30 am on Friday, the weather department said. On Thursday, the minimum temperature in Kalpa was minus 6 degrees Celsius, minus 3.2 in Manali and minus 1 degrees Celsius in Kufri and Bhuntar during the period, MeT Centre Director, Shimla, Manmohan Singh said. The IMD has also predicted isolated to scattered precipitation in the state from January 8 onwards. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said Thursday that it was prepared to deal with any eventuality. Agra was the coldest place in Uttar Pradesh recording the minimum temperature of 4.1 deg Celcius Friday morning. A MeT department spokesperson said night temperature was below normal in Gorakhpur division while at other places it was more or less normal. Dense fog occurred at isolated places over the state. The weatherman forecast that rain or thunder showers were very likely at a few places in western Uttar Pradesh and at isolated places in eastern UP tomorrow. The cold wave in Kashmir intensified as mercury slipped several degrees below freezing point in most places of the valley with Gulmarg recording the lowest night temperature of minus 10 degrees Celsius. There was a slight respite from severe cold wave in most parts of Rajasthan on Thursday as the temperature rose by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, MeT official said. Bhilwara recorded its minimum at 4.1 degrees celsius, while the mercury settled at 4 degrees in Sikar and 4.1 degrees Celsius in Churu, he said.
