The Vyapam scam has once again come into the news after a retired bureaucrat, who was an observer for two recruitment tests in the scam, was found dead in Odisha.The body of retired Indian Forest Services (IFS) officer Vijay Bahadur has been found on a railway track in Jharsuguda.The Vyapam scam is an admission and recruitment scam involving politicians, senior officials and businessmen in Madhya Pradesh.All Vyapam scam related cases were recently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Supreme Court has observed that mysterious deaths related to the scandal have "suddenly stopped" after the central agency started its probe.The opposition in the state has alleged that people linked to the Vyapam scam were dying mysteriously as part of a conspiracy to silence key witnesses.
CBI today carried out searches at nearly 40 places in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pardesh in connection with alleged irregularities in the conduct of examinations by MP Professional Examination Board or Vyapam.

Enforcement Directorate (ED) is set to take possession of assets worth Rs 15 crore belonging to a prime accused in a 'Vyapam' scam case in Madhya Pradesh. The agency, which attached the properties of the alleged mastermind Jagdish Sagar in this case in March this year, got confirmed yesterday the order from the Adjudicating Authority of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based in Delhi. The Authority is the first appellate authority and quasi-judicial body established to decide on attachment orders issued by the central probe agency under stringent anti-money laundering laws. "The Authority has ruled in favour of the agency in this case. The agency will soon take possession of these assets and enforce prohibitory orders under PMLA. Notices would be stuck on the said assets," sources said. The agency's office in Indore had attached about 21 acres of land, four luxury cars and jewellery and cash worth Rs 3.33 crore in the name of Sagar and the estimated market value of these .
Seeking "justice" from President Pranab Mukherjee, 70 medical students and junior doctors, arrested in Vyapam scam and lodged in Gwalior Jail, have written a letter to him, in which they have requested him to release them on bail or allow them to kill themselves. The 70 accused have been arrested on charge of cracking the pre-medical test conducted by scam-ridden Vyapam, using unfair means. "We, the under trial accused in judicial custody, are in jail since a long time. As a result of this, our future is in complete darkness and we are under tremendous mental and social pressure. Seven more FIRs against at least 77 accused were registered today by the CBI to probe alleged irregularities in recruitment tests done by Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) or 'Vyapam'. Three FIRs have been registered against 27 accused for their involvement in alleged irregularities in Police Constable Recruitment Test conducted by MPPEB in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively, a press release issued by the CBI said. The fourth case has been filed against 12 accused persons on the allegations of cheating by impersonation in Jail Prahari Recruitment Test 2012, conducted by Vyapam, it said. Another FIR is also against 12 accused for alleged illegalities committed by them in Pre Medical Test, 2009. The Supreme Court today told CBI to inform it in three weeks about taking over of investigation of maximum number of cases out of 185 arising from Madhya Pradesh's Vyapam scam. The apex court also asked the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) that it should be in a position by next date of hearing on August 7 to fill necessary vacancies in the CBI as the agency has complained that shortage of man power was coming in the way of probe. It sought the assistance of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on the issue of filling of vacancies in the CBI. The Central Bureau of Investigation on Sunday filed fresh FIRs against 38 accused in the Vyapam scam.On Thursday, the CBI had filed an FIR along with two preliminary enquiries, in connection with the controversial scam.It had earlier registered 65 FIRs and five preliminary inquiries into the case.The preliminary inquiries had been registered in Pre-Medical Test 2010, Pre-Post Graduation Medical Examination 2011, irregularities in Pre-Medical Test 2009 and 2010, Forest Guard Recruitment in 2013 and Pre-Medical Test 2011.The CBI had constituted a special team of 40 officers, headed by a Joint Director level officer, to probe the scam.The Supreme Court had earlier transferred all cases relating to the Vyapam scam to the CBI.
Police here detained the wife of the Vyapam scam whistle-blower Prashant Pandey briefly and seized Rs 9.96 lakh cash from her alleging it to be 'hawala' money, with her husband calling it a witch-hunt. Acting on a tip-off about hawala transactions at Laxmi Motors, a private firm situated near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, police kept a vigil and noticed Meghna Pandey -- Prashant's wife -- coming out of the firm's office with a bag yesterday, Superintendent of Police O P Tripathi said. Meghna works at the firm as an HR manager. According to the SP, the women police officers searched her bag and found Rs 9.96 lakh in cash. She couldn't give a satisfactory explanation about the money so it was seized under section 102 of the Criminal Procedure Code, he said. Meghna was allowed to go.
