President Biden offers $450 mn for clean energy projects at coal mines

President Joe Biden's administration is making USD450 million available for solar farms and other clean energy projects at the site of current or former coal mines, part of his efforts to combat climate change. As many as five projects nationwide will be funded through the 2021 infrastructure law, with at least two projects set aside for solar farms, the White House said Tuesday. The White House also said it will allow developers of clean energy projects to take advantage of billions of dollars in new bonuses being offered in addition to investment and production tax credits available through the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The bonuses will "incentivize more clean energy investment in energy communities, particularly coal communities,,'' that have been hurt by a decade-plus decline in U.S. coal production, the White House said. The actions are among steps the Biden administration is taking as the Democratic president moves to convert the U.S. economy to renewable energy such as wi

Amb Garcetti will lead ambitious effort to deepen US-India cooperation: WH

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti will be leading an ambitious effort to deepen America's cooperation with India, including in defence and economic sectors, according to the White House. Garcetti, the former Mayor of Los Angeles, was officially sworn in as the US Ambassador to India on March 24 by Vice President Kamala Harris during a ceremonial event here. The US Senate confirmed 52-year-old Garcetti's nomination earlier last month, ending a protracted hiatus of over two years to fill the key diplomatic position. Garcetti's nomination was pending before the US Congress since July 2021 when he was nominated by President Joe Biden. The president has said, when we look at the relationship with India, it's one of the most consequential relationships that the United States has in the world. That still stands, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Tuesday. Ambassador Garcetti will be leading an ambitious effort to deepen our ..

US is providing Ukraine with $2.6 billion in military aid as war rages

The US will send Ukraine about USD 500 million in ammunition and equipment and spend more than USD 2 billion to buy an array of munitions, radar and other weapons for that country in the future, the White House announced Tuesday, as Ukrainian troops prepare for a spring offensive against Russian forces. Much of the ammunition will be taken from military stockpiles so they can be in the war zone quickly, including US-provided HIMARS, air defense interceptors, and artillery rounds that Ukraine is using to defend itself, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement. HIMARS are multiple rocket launchers. The package, like many of the previous ones, is pushing forward more 155 mm artillery rounds as Ukraine burns through that stock fighting back against Russia's ground invasion. The immediate assistance includes anti-armour systems, small arms, heavy equipment transport vehicles, and maintenance support, the Pentagon said in a statement. We very much appreciate everything that

S Korea, US, Japan hold anti-N Korea submarine drill over missile threats

The South Korean, US and Japanese navies began their first anti-submarine drills in six months on Monday to boost their coordination against increasing North Korean missile threats, South Korea's military said. The two-day drills come as North Korea's recent unveiling of a type of battlefield nuclear warhead prompted worries the country may conduct first nuclear test since 2017. The maritime exercises in international waters off South Korea's southern island of Jeju involved the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and naval destroyers from South Korea, the US and Japan, South Korea's Defence Ministry said in a statement. The training was arranged to improve the three countries' capacities to respond to underwater security threats posed by North Korea's advancing submarine-launched ballistic missiles and other assets, the statement said. It said the three countries were to detect and track unmanned South Korean and US underwater vehicles posing as enemy submarines and other
