The United Arab Emirates' pick to lead the upcoming COP28 climate talks in Dubai called on the world Tuesday to fight climate change, not each other, directly addressing the anger activists have felt over his selection. Sultan al-Jaber, the CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., also described the upcoming United Nations negotiations as an unprecedented opportunity to engage the energy industry in a technological revolution. His speech at the World Government Summit in Dubai sought to present his nominated presidency as a bridge between oil companies and climate activists long suspicious of the industry's influence on efforts to limit carbon emissions. Whether it will, however, remains in question. We need a major course correction, al-Jaber said. However, he added: The strategies we pursue must leave no one behind. The policies we adopt must be pro-growth and pro-climate at the same time. Al-Jaber, a 49-year-old longtime climate envoy, is a trusted confidant of UAE leader Sheikh Moha

The World Cup stadium was designed to leave a minimal footprint in the Qatari sand. It's now due to be dismantled. Stadium 974 played host to seven matches, the last of which was Brazil's 4-1 win over South Korea in the round of 16 on Monday. The Qataris say the stadium will disappear, but it isn't clear when that will happen. The Gulf country will soon stage an Asian Cup, the multi-sport Asian Games and maybe even an Olympics. A look at FIFA requirements for World Cup stadiums and what happens next for Qatar's venues. WHAT DID QATAR NEED? FIFA has clear specifications for a World Cup host's venues plan. A main stadium holding at least 80,000 people to stage the final, at least one more of 60,000 capacity that must host a semifinal, and several more of at least 40,000 though FIFA let Russia have two that dipped below 35,000 four years ago. Qatar had a 12-stadium plan when it bid for and won the hosting rights in 2010. About three years into its long preparations for the 2022 .

India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are expected to launch negotiations for a free trade agreement on November 24 with an aim to boost economic ties between the two regions, an official said. GCC is a union of six countries in the Gulf region -- Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. "The FTA will be launched on November 24. GCC officials will be here to launch the talks," the official said. India has already implemented a free trade pact with the UAE in May this year. Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal had, on November 16, said that India will be launching a new free trade agreement (FTA) next week. This would be a kind of resumption of FTA talks as earlier two rounds of negotiations held in 2006 and 2008 between India and GCC. Third round did not happen as GCC deferred its negotiations with all countries and economic groups.
