Biden administration seeks balance as fears grow Russia may invade Ukraine

The buildup of Russian troops near Ukraine has left US officials perplexed, muddying the Biden administration's response. Some Republican lawmakers have been pressing the US to step up military support for Ukraine. But that risks turning what may be mere muscle-flexing by Russian President Vladimir Putin into a full-blown confrontation that only adds to the peril for Ukraine and could trigger an energy crisis in Europe. But a weak US response carries its own risks. It could embolden Putin to take more aggressive steps against Ukraine as fears grow he could try to seize more of its territory. And it could cause more political damage for President Joe Biden at a time his popularity is dropping. Knowing how to strike the right balance would be easier if the US had a better understanding of what Putin was trying to accomplish. But top officials admit they don't know. We're not sure exactly what Mr. Putin is up to, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday. A week earlier, Secretar

England won't have home support against Ukraine at Euro 2020

Having overcome historic rival Germany in the last 16, facing Ukraine might seem like an easier proposition for England. Turns out, though, that Saturday's quarterfinal match at the Stadio Olimpico might be England's toughest test of the European Championship. That's because it's the only match of Euro 2020 that England will have to play away from the friendly confines of Wembley Stadium. Making matters more complicated is that the Italian government has explicitly warned Britain-based England fans to stay away from the game unless they can prove they have observed five days of quarantine since arriving. For a team like England that is known for its traveling supporters, that's a major blow. We've got to create our own atmosphere on Saturday in Rome, which we're capable of doing, said England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who has kept four clean sheets in the tournament. The fans were tremendous the other night and throughout the group stages as well. I think that gives us added ..

Austria beats Ukraine 1-0 to advance at Euro 2020

A chaotic 15-minute span for Christoph Baumgartner gave Austria the win they wanted and the advancement they craved. The midfielder was involved in a clash of heads early in the first half, then scored the only goal in Austria's 1-0 victory over Ukraine at the European Championship on Monday. Baumgartner jumped to clear a corner in the 17th minute but was knocked to the ground after colliding head-to-head with Illia Zabarnyi. He was given medical attention and was cleared to continue playing. Four minutes later, he knocked in a corner from Austria captain David Alaba on the other end to give his team a lead it was to carry to the final whistle. Baumgartner didn't make it that far, however. He was replaced in the 32nd minute, walking off the field while holding his head. He's OK, Austria coach Franco Foda said. He had some problems before he scored the goal but luckily, he stayed on the pitch, scored the goal. After that, he felt dizzy and we just decided to take him off the pitch
