Statue honouring Sikh soldiers unveiled in UK's Leicester city: Report

A statue of a Sikh soldier was unveiled on Sunday in the UK's Leicester city to honour Sikhs who fought for Britain in conflicts around the world. The bronze figure on a granite plinth went on display in Victoria Park on Sunday, the BBC reported. The Sikh Troops War Memorial Committee said it would complement the existing war memorials already there. Sikhs made up more than 20 per cent of the British Indian Army at the outbreak of World War I, the report added. The statue was created by artist Taranjit Singh and paid for with council funding and donations from Sikh congregations. "We are so proud to be unveiling this memorial to honour the sacrifice of all those brave men who travelled thousands of miles to fight for a country that wasn't their own," Ajmer Singh Basra, president of the committee, was quoted as saying by the report. He said the statue would serve as a reminder to Sikhs who have made Leicester their home, the report added. Piara Singh Clair, from Leicester City Co

Sharp rise in stroke cases among young adults in UK, reveals study

Incidence of stroke in young adults have witnessed a sharp increase, according to a study of more than 94,000 people in Oxfordshire, reflecting growing evidence that the medical emergency in that demographic is a growing problem in high-income countries. The study was funded by the Medical Research Foundation and analysed the rate of new stroke cases in Oxfordshire, UK, over the last 20 years. Stroke is a major health problem that can have devastating consequences. It occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. This leads to death of brain cells and dysfunction in one or more parts. The restricted blood supply can be the result of an artery supplying blood to the brain being blocked, a blood vessel rupture causing a bleed inside the brain, or a brief reduction in blood supply to the brain. The traditional view is that vascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity play a minor role in stroke among young adults. However, recent studies have begun t

UK PM Rishi Sunak, family to move back to smaller flat at 10 Downing Street

Newly-appointed British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his family will be returning to live in a smaller flat above No 10 Downing Street as they were "very happy there," his spokesperson has said. No 10 Downing Street has been the residence of British prime ministers since 1735, says the government's website. It has three functions - the official residence of the Prime Minister, their office and where the prime minister entertains guests from world leaders to royalty. Sunak, along with his wife Akshata Murty and two daughters, stayed in the flat when he was chancellor to former prime minister Boris Johnson. Many Prime Ministers of recent years - especially those with children - have lived in the larger flat above No 11, officially designated for the chancellor. Asked why Sunak has opted for No 10 instead, a Downing Street spokeswoman said on Wednesday: "They were very happy there." The residential areas inside Downing Street, are generally kept away from the public eye. Speaking

Working towards best FTA with 'economic superpower' India: UK's Greg Hands

Describing India as an "economic superpower", Britain said on Wednesday that it was working towards the "best" Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that is beneficial to both the countries. India and Britain launched negotiations for the FTA in January with an aim to conclude talks by Diwali but the deadline was missed due to a lack of consensus on issues. "We have already closed the majority of Chapters and look forward to the next round of talks shortly," Secretary of State for International Trade Greg Hands said while replying to a question from Nick Thomas-Symonds, Shadow international trade secretary. A "strong FTA can strengthen the economic links between UK and India, boosting the UK economy by more than 3 billion pounds by 2035, helping families and communities," he said. He said that the FTA can cut red tapes, make it cheaper for UK companies to sell into India's dynamic market , helping drive growth and support jobs across every nation and region. Greater access could help UK ...

UK PM Sunak warns of 'very difficult decisions' to tackle economic crisis

Britain's newly-appointed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday warned that his government will have to take some "very difficult decisions" but assured the people that he would also act with compassion while tackling the country's "profound economic crisis." Sunak, Britain's first Indian-origin Prime Minister, took office on Tuesday with a pledge to fix the "mistakes" his predecessor Liz Truss made which left a blackhole in government finances and the markets in turmoil. Sunak, the third prime minister in seven weeks, opened the Cabinet meeting by saying that "economic stability and fiscal sustainability would be at the heart" of his government's mission, according to a read-out from his first cabinet meeting. "This morning I set out to Cabinet the enormous task we face, and why I am confident that this government can rise to the challenge and deliver for the whole United Kingdom," Sunak tweeted. "Now is the time to get to work and earn the trust of the British people," he wrote

Hopes for India-UK FTA talks impetus with new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

As Rishi Sunak takes over as Britain's first Indian-origin Prime Minister on Tuesday, there is renewed hope that the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) will get a much-needed impetus after the Diwali deadline for draft completion was missed amid political turmoil in the UK. While the October timeline was set by former prime minister Boris Johnson during his India visit in April, Sunak is on the record expressing his commitment to an FTA with India while Chancellor of the Exchequer at No. 11 Downing Street. He has flagged financial services as a particularly exciting aspect of the bilateral trade relationship and pointed to enormous opportunity for both countries in fintech and the insurance sector. I'm very supportive of India playing an increasingly influential role in the region, and indeed, in the world as a massive economy and the world's largest democracy and an FTA would prove a greater champion of that cause, Sunak told reporters back in July. Financial service is an area ..

UK court to hear Uyghur demands to ban import of Xinjiang cotton products

A Uyghur organization and a human rights group are taking the UK government to court to challenge Britain's failure to block the import of cotton products associated with forced labour and other abuses in China's far western Xinjiang region. Tuesday's hearing at the High Court in London is believed the first time a foreign court hears legal arguments from the Uyghurs over the issue of forced labor in Xinjiang. The region is a major global supplier of cotton, but rights groups have long alleged that the cotton is picked and processed by China's Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities in a widespread, state-sanctioned system of forced labour. The case, brought by the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress and the Global Legal Action Network, a nonprofit, is one of several similar legal challenges aimed at putting pressure on the U.K. and European Union governments to follow the lead of the United States, where a law took effect this year to ban all cotton products suspected of being mad
