World stocks mixed after Wall Street rebound led by tech, financial firms

World shares were mostly higher on Friday after a broad rally led by tech and financial companies snapped a three-day losing streak on Wall Street. Germany's DAX gained 0.3% to 15,241.57 while the CAC 40 in Paris rose 0.4% to 6,315.27. Britain's FTSE 100 picked up 0.6% to 7,005.56. The future for the S&P 500 gained 0.5% while that for the Dow industrials added 0.3%. Markets rallied late in the week as prices of key commodities such as copper, zinc and aluminum slipped, alleviating concerns over inflation that had triggered sell-offs. Shares in big semiconductor manufacturers were among the biggest gainers. Japan's Nikkei 225 added 2.3% to 28,084.47 and the Kospi in Seoul picked up 1% to 3,153.32, lifted by gains for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which gained 2.3% and 1.3% after announcing plans to expand their investments in chip production and development. Online assessment firm Mercer Mettl sees 2021 as year of strong growth

Online assessment firm Mercer Mettl on Tuesday said it expects 2021 to be a year of strong growth for the company with most of the economic activities coming out of pandemic. The company's support to corporate for online assessments for hiring and other activities was impacted during the pandemic but growth in the education vertical covered up the adverse impact on overall business, Mercer Mettle CEO Siddhartha Gupta said. "All companies were not hiring. They were also not keen on spending their dollar on L&D (learning and development). It slowed for three months. "The education business grew, which made up for whatever business came down for us. COVID-19 has not impacted us negatively in 2020," Gupta said while announcing a web-based examination platform of the company. Visual technology firm Barco to make India its global innovation, R&D hub

Visual technology firm Barco on Wednesday said it is working to make India its global innovation hub. Barco India Managing Director Rajiv Bhalla announced setting up of the company's biggest global software research and development (R&D) centre in Noida spread over an area of 51,500 sq ft. "India has one of the most talented pools of engineers. We need to provide them with good infrastructure and work environment to attract them. That is one of the reasons for setting up new R&D and software hub," Bhalla said. Barco India has a headcount of 550 people. Out of that, 160 are engaged in R&D. "Barco is working towards making India its global innovation and R&D hub. Equipped with a state-of-the-art facility to cater to cutting-edge research across verticals. OutSystems raises $150 mn investment, valuation rises to $9.5 billion

Tech firm OutSystems on Wednesday said it has raised USD 150 million (about Rs 1,092 crore) capital, co-led by Abdiel Capital and Tiger Global, valuing the company at USD 9.5 billion. The funding will be used to expand investments in its R&D and GTM (go-to-market) strategy, a statement said. Founded in Portugal in 2001, OutSystems' modern application platform tools help developers rapidly build and deploy a full range of applications. The company has more than 3.5 lakh community members, over 1,300 employees, 350 partners (including AWS, Deloitte and Infosys), and thousands of active customers in 87 countries and across 22 industries.
