Pointing to the arrest of as many as 16 fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy days ago, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take necessary steps to get them freed and a total of 102 seized fishing boats as well. Citing the arrest of 16 fishermen and the seizure of their two mechanised fishing boats by the Sri Lankan Navy on March 12, 2023, Stalin, writing to Modi said that the two boats belonged to Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai Districts fishermen. "This is the third incident of attack/arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan nationals/Navy within a month and as you are aware, these fishermen are solely dependent on their fishing activity for livelihood and such frequent incidents shatter the livelihood of poor fishermen and also create fear psychosis in their mind," he said in a letter on Monday. AIADMK holds state-wide protest, demands withdrawal of case against EPS

Tamil Nadu's principal opposition AIADMK on Monday staged state-wide protest demanding that the ruling DMK regime 'withdraw the false case' against party interim chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). Former Ministers Sellur K Raju, R B Udhayakumar and AIADMK organising secretary V V Rajan Chellappa led a protest in southern Madurai condemning the DMK government. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday assured both handloom and powerloom weavers that their long-pending demands would be fulfilled soon. TN Cabinet decides to pass Bill to ban online gambling, send to Guv Ravi

In a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday, the Tamil Nadu government decided to pass again a Bill in the Assembly to ban online gambling and send it to Governor R N Ravi once more for his assent. A day after Ravi returned the TN Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill stating that it lacked legislative competence, the government asserted that it has the competence to legislate on the matter. Paragliding turns nightmare as glider gets entangled in high-mast pole

Adventure tourism at Varkala beach turned a harrowing experience for a tourist from Tamil Nadu on Tuesday afternoon after she and her paragliding instructor got entangled on a more than 50-metre tall high-mast lamp pole and were left hanging from it for nearly two hours before being rescued. As the Fire department did not have a ladder which was not tall enough, the rescue plan was to lower the columns of the high mast to bring them to safety and as a precautionary measure mattresses and nets were placed at the bottom of the pole, police said. Thereafter, the pole was lowered and the 28-year old woman and the paragliding instructor were rescued, police said. Both of them have been admitted to the Taluk Hospital in Varkala and are safe, police said. The mishap occurred when the paragliders, who took off from a helipad at Varkala, were blown towards the high mast lamp pole due to a sudden change in wind direction, police said. Tamil Nadu health dept to hold 1,000 fever camps on Mar 10 as cases rise

The health department would hold over 1,000 fever camps on March 10 in the wake of reported increase in fever cases among the public in Tamil Nadu, Medical and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian said on Sunday. The minister said mobile fever clinics would be deployed in 200 places on the day aimed at benefitting members of the public in the city. In a statement here, Subramanian said fever cases reported were due to cold conditions that prevailed in the state till recently. Its symptoms include body ache, throat pain, cold, cough and fever. Each fever camp would have a doctor accompanied with a nurse, lab technician and an assistant. Senior citizens and those ailing with co-morbidities, parents with children are appealed to take part in the camps. Adequate medicines have been made available in the camps, he said. To prevent the spread of the disease, one can protect themselves by wearing a facial mask, hand hygiene, maintaining social distance, he said in the release.

SC issues notice on TN govt's plea against Madras HC order on Gutka ban

The Supreme Court has sought a response to a plea challenging an order of the Madras High Court quashing a May 2018 notification prohibiting the sale, manufacture and transport of gutkha and other tobacco-based products. A bench of justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna issued notice to Food Safety Commissioner, Jayavilas Tobacco Traders and others on a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government. "Issue notice in the special leave petition. Issue notice in the prayer for interim relief also" the bench said.
