The revised power tariff of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) came into effect on Saturday despite opposition by various political parties. The new tariff, approved by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC), however, retained the existing scheme of providing 100 units free to domestic, multi-tenements, old age homes and handlooms consumers. The domestic consumers will have to pay Rs 4.50 per unit consumed, as against Rs 3 per unit up to 500 units, up to 400 units for two months and Rs 6.50 per unit from 401 to 500 units, and Rs 8 per unit for 501 to 600 units. The cost will be Rs 9 a unit for up to 601 to 800 units consumed, Rs 10 per unit will be charged for 801 to 1,000 units while Rs 11 per unit will be levied for above 1,000 units. The common supply for lighting and motor pump in small apartments and additional connections in individual apartments should be brought under the new category LT-ID where each unit is charged Rs 8

Tamil Nadu on Friday recorded 436 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the total caseload to 35,72,802. A lone passenger from Canada added to 436 positive cases today. There have been 38,038 fatalities due to the contagion so far and no death was reported today, according to a bulletin from the State health department. A total of 35,29,846 COVID-19 patients were discharged following treatment so far and this includes 442 who recovered today. The active cases declined to 4,918 from 4,924, a day ago. Among the districts, Chennai, Coimbatore and Chengalpattu recorded a maximum of 87, 57 and 43 cases, respectively.
Airports Authority of India on Friday said it is carrying out a major upgradation work at its Tuticorin airport in Tamil Nadu at an investment of Rs 381-crore to cater to rising passenger traffic. The upgradation work includes widening and extension of the runway to enable operations of A-321 type of aircraft, construction of a new apron, new terminal building, ATC tower-cum-technical block-cum-control tower, among others, AAI said in a statement. Spread over 13,500 sq mt of space, the new terminal building will be able to handle 600 passengers during peak hours and will have all the modern facilities and passenger amenities with provision for two aerobridges along with car parking facilities and a new approach road, it added. The upgraded facility will also have a fire station, isolation bay and five aircraft parking bays to park A-321 type of aircraft, AAI said.

To transform rural credit delivery system, the Reserve Bank has decided to launch pilot projects to digitise Kisan Credit Card (KCC) in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Based on the learnings from the pilot, it is planned to expand the digitalisation of KCC lending to other districts in these two states and gradually across the country, the RBI said in a statement. The pilot project would entail automation of various processes within banks and integration of their systems with the service providers, it said, adding, the proposed digitalisation of the KCC lending process will make it more efficient, reduce costs for borrowers and reduce turn around time (TAT) significantly. The TAT from loan application to disbursement has also been rather high, ranging from two to four weeks.
