Ford executes settlement agreement with workers in Tamil Nadu plant

Ford India, the subsidiary of the US car maker Ford on Saturday said it has concluded negotiations on the 'severance settlement package' with the employees of its manufacturing plant near here, a year after it announced that it would exit the Indian market as part of the company's 'restructuring exercise.' Ford India Transformation Officer Balasundaram Radhakrishnan handed over the updated settlement agreement to the office bearers of the Chennai Ford Employees Union representing the 2,592 employees on Friday, a statement from the company said. "The severance settlement agreement, signed between Ford and the Union today (Friday) is an important milestone and a win-win for everyone involved. I thank the team at Ford as well as the Chennai Ford Employees Union for negotiating in good faith and arriving at a settlement outcome that keeps the best interest of employees," Radhakrishnan said. Tamil Nadu registers 522 new Covid-19 infections, no death in last 24 hours

Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 522 new COVID-19 infections pushing the caseload to 35,83,104, the health department said. The death toll remained unchanged at 38,046 as there were no fresh fatalities. Chennai witnessed a marginal rise with 104 cases as compared to 98 on Thursday, Chengalpet added 50, Coimbatore 38 while the remaining was spread across other districts. As many as 533 people recuperated from the virus in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 35,39,562 that left 5,496 active infections, a medical bulletin said. Eighteen districts reported new cases below 10 while Ariyalur and Tiruvarur reported zero new cases, each. The state capital leads among districts with 2,375 active infections and overall 7,90,497 coronavirus cases. A total of 15,386 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests so far to 6,94,25,293, the bulletin said.

Tamil Nadu to soon come out with electronic hardware policy: CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu would soon come out with a new electronic hardware policy aimed at boosting domestic hardware production and exports, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Friday. The State has been attracting investments not only in manufacturing of smartphones but also in computers, electronic parts, telecommunication equipment, home appliances, he said after inaugurating a manufacturing unit of Pegatron Technology India Pvt Ltd in neighbouring Chengalpet district. "The government considers the electronics department as an emerging sector and soon a Tamil Nadu electronic hardware policy will be rolled out to boost domestic production and exports," Stalin said. He unveiled a plaque at Mahindra World City, about 45 km from here, to mark the inauguration of the manufacturing facility set up at an investment of Rs 1,100 crore that would generate 14,000 jobs. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regretted on Thursday that learning of Sanskrit is discouraged in Tamil Nadu. She said in her early schooling and going till college, learning Sanskrit was not easy at all because of the "political environment in which we lived." "And it's not as if I lived in a foreign country. I lived in Tamil Nadu. Sanskrit was discouraged and I think even today they discourage," Sitharaman said. In spite of that, she said her parents insisted and she found a good teacher and privately learnt Sanskrit "somewhat". SC to hear pleas against TN, Maha's bull-taming sport Jallikattu on Nov 22

The Supreme Court on Thursday said it would hear on November 22 a batch of pleas challenging Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra laws allowing bull-taming sport 'Jallikattu' and bullock cart races. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph was told by senior advocate Anand Grover, appearing for the petitioners, that the amendments with respect to Jallikattu are unconstitutional. The bench, also comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and C T Ravikumar, said it would take up the matter in November. The top court had earlier said that the petitions challenging the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, needed to be decided by a larger bench since they involved substantial questions relating to interpretation of the Constitution. Tamil Nadu Cabinet gives assent to ordinance to regulate online gambling

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet on Monday gave its nod to promulgate an ordinance to regulate online gambling. The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin here, took the decision after final touches were given to the draft ordinance. It would be promulgated once the Governor R N Ravi gives his assent, the government said. In June this year, the Chief Minister announced a new law to curb online gambling, and the State government constituted a panel under retired judge of the Madras High Court Justice K Chandru to recommend on the promulgation of an ordinance to regulate online gambling in the State. Accordingly, the recommendation was submitted to the Chief Minister on June 27, 2022, and it was placed before the Cabinet the same day for consideration.
