Online sources such as Wikipedia not completely dependable: SC

Online sources such as Wikipedia are based on a crowd sourced and user generated editing model that is not completely dependable and can promote misleading information, the Supreme Court has said. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath said it acknowledged the utility of the platforms that provide free access to knowledge across the globe but also cautioned against using such sources for legal dispute resolution. "We say so for the reason that these sources, despite being a treasure trove of knowledge, are based on a crowd sourced and user generated editing model that is not completely dependable in terms of academic veracity and can promote misleading information as has been noted by this court on previous occasions also," the bench said on Tuesday. The apex court said courts and adjudicating authorities should endeavour to persuade counsels to rely on more reliable and authentic sources. The observations came in a judgment in a case regarding the correct classification

Govt delaying judges' appointment till its own people in place: Congress

The government is deliberately delaying the appointment of judges to create a "designed schism and a consequent logjam" till people favourable to its "ideological masters" are appointed, the Congress alleged on Tuesday. The party's fresh attack comes a day after it said the government was intimidating the judiciary in a bid to totally capture it and alleged that Law Minister Kiren Rijiju's suggestion to restructure the Collegium system is a "poison pill" for the judiciary. The Narendra Modi government is following a policy of "deliberately withholding Collegium recommendations for months and years" to keep the fate of named judges in limbo, Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala alleged. He said this is a "designed attack to avoid accountability by the government and with malintent to capture the judiciary". "The prime minister, law minister and other Constitutional authorities are deliberately attacking the integrity and independence of the judiciary by a design. The underly

We don't keep people behind bars unnecessarily: SC on 2020 Delhi riots

"We don't believe in unnecessarily keeping people behind the bars," the Supreme Court observed on Tuesday while hearing the pleas filed by the Delhi Police against the bail granted to three student activists in a case of the 2020 North East Delhi riots. A bench headed by Justice S K Kaul said spending hours hearing the bail petitions in the case was a "complete wastage" of time of the Delhi High Court. The bench, also comprising Justices A S Oka and J B Pardiwala, was hearing the pleas filed by the police challenging the Delhi High Court's June 15, 2021 verdicts granting bail to activists Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita and Asif Iqbal Tanha in the case related to communal violence during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). At the outset, advocate Rajat Nair, appearing for police, requested the bench to post the petitions for hearing after two weeks, saying Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who is leading him, is arguing before a Constitution bench in a separate

Services row: Centre raises issue of protest by AAP MLAs against Delhi Gov

The Centre on Tuesday raised in the Supreme Court the protest held by AAP MLAs against alleged interferences by the lieutenant governor's office in the Delhi government's works and termed the demonstration as "undesirable". The moment a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud assembled to hear the vexatious Centre-Delhi government row over control of services, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the central government, raised the issue of the protest. On Monday, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs marched to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) office to protest against its alleged interferences in the elected government's functioning. "There is one caveat. I would confine myself to the legal submissions only. While I say this, certain events are happening in the national capital while your Lordships are in midst of the matter. Some protests are being held," the law officer said at the outset of the proceedings. He termed
