Mutual funds focussed on investing in fixed-income securities witnessed an outflow of Rs 13,815 crore in February, making it the third month of withdrawals in a row despite expectations that the rate hike cycle was nearing its end. In comparison, such funds saw an outflow of Rs 10,316 crore in January and Rs 21,947 crore in December. Prior to that, debt funds saw a net infusion of Rs 3,668 crore in November 2022, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) showed. Of the 16 fixed-income or debt fund categories, nine witnessed net outflows during the month under review and the remaining six saw inflow. The heavy withdrawal was seen from liquid funds. The mutual fund industry added Rs 2.2 lakh crore to its asset base in 2022, driven by consistent monthly increase in SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) flows. The Assets Under Management (AUM) of the mutual fund industry rose by 5.7 per cent or Rs 2.2 lakh crore to a total Rs 39.88 lakh crore in 2022, data from the Association of Mutual Fund Industry (Amfi) showed on Tuesday. This was way lower than a surge of nearly 22 per cent or an increase of close to Rs 7 lakh crore in the asset base to Rs 37.72 lakh crore in 2021. "The industry grew at a slower pace in 2022 due to uncertainty in stock markets, and changing interest rate scenarios affecting the business environment at large. Investors are betting big on systematic investment plans or SIPs to generate long-term wealth, with monthly flows in the mutual fund industry through the route rising to an all-time high of Rs 13,040 crore in October. This surpassed the Rs 12,976 crore inflow seen in September, data with Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) showed on Thursday. The inflows through SIPs have been above the Rs 12,000-crore mark since May. It was at Rs 12,140 crore in July, Rs 12,276 crore in June and Rs 12,286 crore in May. Prior to that, it was at Rs 11,863 crore in April. With this, total inflow has reached over Rs 87,000 crore in the first seven months of the current fiscal. Driven by inflows into Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), the mutual fund industry's total assets under management rose to Rs 39.88 lakh crore in September from Rs 36.73 lakh crore in the year-ago period. On a monthly basis, the Assets Under Management (AUM) increased marginally from Rs 39.33 lakh crore in August. According to the latest monthly data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) released on Monday, the industry wide net AUM stood at Rs 38.42 lakh crore in September. Amfi said the month also saw the highest-ever folio addition to 13.81 crore. The retail folios also touched an all-time high to 10.99 crore. The contribution of SIPs rose to Rs 12.97 lakh crore in September, which is the highest ever, from Rs 12.69 lakh crore, Amfi said, adding the number of SIP accounts also increased to 5.84 crore.
