The Allahabad High Court has quashed criminal proceedings against Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid for his remarks against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The proceedings were quashed after Khurshid expressed regret, saying he did not intend to hurt anyone. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh allowed the petition filed by Khurshid for quashing the criminal proceedings. Khurshid made the statement during the poll campaign while responding to questions by journalists about an alleged statement of the chief minister that the Congress leader was a sympathiser of the Batla House accused/terrorists. In response, Khurshid, a former law minister, made the alleged indecent remark. In the 2008 Batla House case, some terrorists and a police inspector were killed. The former law minister said his statement was made in a lighter vein and it was is a famous dialogue from the movie "Shahanshah". He said he had no intention to be ...

BJY meant to unite country, should not be given political colour: Khurshid

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Thursday said the Bharat Jodo Yatra should not be given a political colour as it is a march of common man and is meant to unite India. "Rahul Gandhi does not want that the Yatra should be linked with elections," the former Union minister told reporters here. He said the Rahul Gandhi-led Yatra is not only of the Congress but of women, traders, farmers and children and is meant to unite people, society and the country. To a question, Khurshid said senior leaders have chosen Mallikarjun Kharge, an experienced person, as the Congress president and he was happy that the party chief was not only devoting full time but also trying to make the organisation strong by reaching to the grassroot-level workers and propagating secular thinking. "Ek ek taraf sangathan ko majboot kiya ja raha hai aur dusari taraf desh ko jodane ka kaam ho raha hai (On one hand, the organisation is being made stronger and on the other, work to unite the country is going on)

Khurshid calls Rahul Gandhi 'superhuman', lauds for Bharat Jodo Yatra

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has described Rahul Gandhi as "superhuman" and a "yogi doing tapasya", lauding the former party chief for his Bharat Jodo Yatra. He also compared Gandhi to Lord Ram and Congress workers to his brother Bharat. Talking to reporters here on Monday, Khurshid, who is the state coordinator of the yatra, said, "Rahul Gandhi is superhuman. While we are freezing in the cold and wearing jackets, he is going out in T-shirt (for the Bharat Jodo Yatra). He is like a yogi, he has called himself so, doing his 'tapasya' (penance) with focus." Drawing a parallel with Lord Ram and his brother Bharat, Khurshid said, "Lord Ram's 'khadau' (wooden slipper) goes very far. Sometimes when Ram ji is not able to reach, Bharat takes his 'khadau' and goes to places. Like that, we have carried the 'khadau' in Uttar Pradesh. Now that 'khadau' has reached Uttar Pradesh. Ram ji will also come, this is our belief." He was responding to a question about the Gandhi-led yatra not

Cong will follow Covid guidelines, but Yatra will not be stopped: Khurshid

The Congress will follow all COVID-related guidelines, but the Bharat Jodo Yatra will not be stopped, senior party leader Salman Khurshid said on Thursday. His statement came after Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday wrote a letter to Rahul Gandhi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot asking them to consider suspending the march if COVID-19 protocols could not be followed. "The Congress will follow all the precautions related to the prevention of Covid, but the yatra will not stop, will not stop, will not stop," Kurshid, the yatra's coordination committee chairman in Uttar Pradesh, told reporters here. He was answering a question on whether the letter will affect the march. In a democratic system, every party and individual has the right to speak their mind, the former union minister said. "The government is scared of this Congress yatra, that is why various orders and letters are being issued," he said. He informed that Rahul Gandhi-led yatra will enter Uttar

Country's unity above win or loss in elections: Cong leader Salman Khurshid

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has said winning or losing elections is not important but what is important is the unity of the country. On his party's defeat in the just concluded Gujarat assembly elections, he said the Congress' vote went to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and termed it a matter of concern. Khurshid, who arrived here on Saturday to flag off the regional 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', attacked the Modi government and said the need for this yatra has arisen because the country is getting divided and the distance between people is increasing. "It is more important to unite the country. It is not necessary whether you win or lose the election," he told reporters. On the defeat in Gujarat, Khurshid said, "Our vote got transferred to AAP, so losing is not a matter of concern, what is the matter of concern is to find out how our vote went to Kejriwal?" Warning the BJP of any misadventure -- hinting at horse trading -- in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress leader said if the saffron
