Ukrainian nuclear plant cut off from electrical grid due to fire damage

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the middle of the fighting in Ukraine was temporarily cut off from the electrical grid Thursday because of fire damage, causing a blackout in the region and heightening fears of a catastrophe in a country haunted by the Chernobyl disaster. The plant, Europe's largest, has been occupied by Russian forces since the early days of the war. The government in Kyiv alleges Russia is essentially holding the plant hostage, storing weapons there and launching attacks from around it, while Moscow accuses Ukraine of recklessly firing on the facility. On Thursday, the plant was cut off from the grid for the first time after fires damaged a transmission line, according to Ukraine's nuclear power operator. The damaged line apparently carried outgoing electricity and thus the region lost power, according to Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russia-installed governor. As a result of the damage, the two reactors still in use went offline, he said, but one was quickly ..

Despite headwinds from Ukraine war, India exhibits many bright spots: Birla

Despite global headwinds due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and lingering post-pandemic challenges, the Indian economy has some "bright spots" to help sail through the choppy waters, industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla said on Friday. Addressing shareholders of Aditya Birla Capital Ltd (ABCL) at the company's Annual General Meeting (AGM), Birla said the turn of the decade felt like a "moment of departure", making 2020 an unprecedented year marred by the pandemic, followed by supply side woes of 2021 and then the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. Global stagflation is making 2022 feel unprecedented and disruption now feels like 'business as usual', Birla noted. "The Indian economy has not remained unscathed by these global developments. India has also witnessed upward pressures on inflation, rate hikes by the RBI and a widening trade deficit. We are also seeing greater turbulence in currency markets," said Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group's financial services arm ABCL. Nevertheless

Vatican's diplomacy sees setbacks, Ukraine heartbroken over Pope's comment

The Vatican's Russia-Ukraine diplomacy suffered two setbacks Thursday when the head of the Russian Orthodox Church cancelled a planned meeting with Pope Francis and Ukraine summoned the papal ambassador to complain about Francis' latest comments about the war. "The Ukrainian heart is torn apart by the pope's words," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters in Kyiv after the Vatican nuncio was summoned. "It was unfair." He was responding to Francis' comments about the weekend car bomb slaying in Moscow of Darya Dugina, a nationalist Russian TV commentator and daughter of the right-wing Russian political theorist, Alexander Dugin, who ardently supports the war. Francis listed the "poor girl" killed by a car bomb in Moscow, as well as orphans in Ukraine and Russia, among the "innocents" who have been victimized by the "insanity of war." Russia has accused Ukrainian intelligence in the bombing, which Ukraine denies. Francis has denounced the war in Ukraine but has tried

For the first time, India votes against Russia in UNSC on Ukraine

India for the first time on Wednesday voted against Russia during a procedural vote at the United Nations Security Council on Ukraine, as the 15-member powerful UN body invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address a meeting through a video tele-conference. This is for the first time that India has voted against Russia on the issue of Ukraine, after the Russian military action began in February. So far, New Delhi has abstained at the UN Security Council on Ukraine, much to the annoyance of the Western powers led by the United States. Western nations, including the US, have imposed major economic and other sanctions on Russia following the aggression. India has not criticised Russia for its aggression against Ukraine. New Delhi has repeatedly called upon the Russian and Ukrainian sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue, and also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the two countries. India currently is a non-permanen

Putin orders Russian military to beef up forces by 137,000 amid Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered the Russian military to increase the size of the country's armed forces by 137,000 amid Moscow's military action in Ukraine. Putin's decree, which takes effect on Jan 1, didn't explain whether the military will beef up its ranks by drafting a bigger number of conscripts, increasing the number of volunteer soldiers or using a combination of both. The presidential decree seeks to boost the number of Russian armed forces' personnel to 2,039,758 overall, including 1,150,628 servicemen. A previous order put the military's numbers at 1,902,758 and 1,013,628 respectively at the start of 2018. The Kremlin has said that only volunteer contract soldiers take part in what it calls the special military operation in Ukraine, rejecting claims that it was pondering a broad mobilisation. Russian media and non-governmental organizations say Russian authorities have sought to bolster the number of troops involved in the military action in Ukraine

India calls for immediate cessation of hostilities, violence in Ukraine

Calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence in Ukraine, India reaffirmed that it advocates dialogue and diplomacy to end the Russia-Ukraine war and mitigate economic challenges emerging from the conflict, particularly in the developing countries. India's Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj, speaking during a Security Council meeting to mark six months since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine on Wednesday, said it is in collective interest to work constructively, both inside the United Nations and outside, towards seeking an early resolution to the war. "We continue to reiterate that the global order is anchored on international law, the UN Charter and respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of states," she said. "India continues to advocate for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to violence. We encourage talks between Ukraine and Russia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has himself, more than once, spoken to them, in this regard," she
