Need to focus on preparations for prolonged wars: IAF chief V R Chaudhari

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine that began in February has brought to focus the need for making preparations for prolonged wars instead of short and swift operations, Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari said on Saturday. In an interactive session at the AajTak Agenda programme, Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari, replying to a question on his force's operational readiness in case of requirement, said, "IAF's preparations have been to be able to deliver weapons of our choice at the time of our choosing." Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said his force is focusing on doing away with obsolete norms and practices, adding the possibility of a tri-services rank system is also being examined. "We are studying what are the practices which are not relevant. We are thinking of making some changes in the ranks. For example, we are also considering why not change the ranks and the possibility of making it a common tri-services sort of rank/nomination," he said. "Among our sailors, we have a rank of petty

India abstains on UNSC resolution on exempting aid from sanctions

India abstained in the UN Security Council on a resolution that was adopted by 14 votes in favour on exempting humanitarian aid efforts from sanctions. The Council voted on the resolution presented by the US and Ireland, with 14 of the 15 Council members voting in favour and India the sole abstention. In the explanation of vote, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said India engaged constructively in the negotiations on the resolution, which provides a carve-out from sanctions in support of the timely delivery of humanitarian assistance or to support other activities meeting basic human needs. The resolution is also intended to ensure much needed predictability and safeguards to humanitarian agencies. However, India will call for caution and due diligence to be exercised while extending humanitarian assistance to proscribed entities under 1267, who continue to thrive with full state hospitality in territories universally acknowledged as terrorist ...

Russia, Iran moving toward full defence 'partnership', claims Biden govt

The Biden administration is accusing Russia of moving to provide advanced military assistance to Iran, including air defense systems, helicopters and fighter jets, part of deepening cooperation between the two nations as Tehran provides drones to support Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby on Friday cited U.S. intelligence assessments for the allegations, saying Russia was offering Iran an unprecedented level of military and technical support that is transforming their relationship into a full-fledged defense partnership. Kirby said Russia and Iran were considering standing up a drone assembly line in Russia for the Ukraine conflict, while Russia was training Iranian pilots on the Sukhoi Su-35 fighter and Iran could receive deliveries of the plane within the year. These fighter planes will significantly strengthen Iran's air force relative to its regional neighbors, Kirby said. The U.S. allegations are part of a deliberat

Nato chief fears Russian-Ukraine war could widen into a wider conflict

The head of NATO expressed worry that the fighting in Ukraine could spin out of control and become a war between Russia and NATO, according to an interview released Friday. If things go wrong, they can go horribly wrong, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in remarks to Norwegian broadcaster NRK. It is a terrible war in Ukraine. It is also a war that can become a full-fledged war that spreads into a major war between NATO and Russia, he said. We are working on that every day to avoid that. Stoltenberg, a former prime minister of Norway, said in the interview that there is no doubt that a full-fledged war is a possibility, adding that it was important to avoid a conflict "that involves more countries in Europe and becomes a full-fledged war in Europe. The Kremlin has repeatedly accused NATO allies of effectively becoming a party to the conflict by providing Ukraine with weapons, training its troops and feeding military intelligence to attack Russian forces. Helping Ukraine is 'self-preservation' for West: Finance chief Marchenko

Ukraine's finance minister says crucial Western financial support is not charity but self-preservation in the fight to defend democracy as his country deals with growing costs to repair electrical and heating infrastructure wrecked by Russian attacks. Serhiy Marchenko also told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday from Kyiv that he believes European Union officials will sort out a dispute with Hungary that has blocked a key 18 billion-euro (USD 18.97 billion) aid package and would cover much of Ukraine's looming budget gap. Marchenko said financial support for Ukraine is tiny compared to what developed countries spent to combat emergencies like the global financial crisis of 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic. And that the money bolsters freedom and security far beyond his country's struggle, he added. It's not charity to support Ukraine, Marchenko said. We are trying to protect freedom and democracy of all (the) civilized world." He said the damage from Russian missile attack

US sending additional $275 million in military aid to Ukraine: Officials

The US is sending an additional USD 275 million in military aid to Ukraine, including large amounts of ammunition and high-tech systems that can be used to detect and counter drones in its ongoing war with Russia, according to US officials. The total aid amount is smaller than most of the recent packages the US has delivered, and it comes as many military officials and experts predict a reduction in attacks during the winter. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Russia appears to be slowing its military activities to regroup and launch a new offensive when the weather warms. The officials said the latest package of aid includes 80,000 rounds of ammunition for howitzers and an undisclosed amount of ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, known as HIMARS. It also includes systems to counter drones and air defences, along with more HUMVEES, generators and other combat equipment. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the aid package prior to .
