Ukraine's infrastructure targeted in another Russian missile barrage

Several regions of Ukraine, including its capital, were facing a Russian missile attack Thursday morning, the latest in a series targeting national infrastructure. Air raid sirens rang out across the country. In Kyiv, the regional administration said that air defence systems were activated to fend off the ongoing missile attack. Sounds of explosions were heard in the city. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said numerous explosions took place in Ukraine's second-largest city. French defence chief vsists Ukraine, pledges army equipment, $212 million

France's defence minister on Wednesday pledged further military support for Ukraine insisting his government's backing is unflagging while efforts are also being made with Moscow to reach an eventual negotiated end to Russia's invasion. French Minister for the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu said his trip to Kyiv was important to identify the priorities of the Ukrainian defence ministry. France's support will include a 200 million euro (US$212 million) fund that would allow Ukraine to purchase weapons, Lecornu said. Lecornu travelled to Ukraine's capital after a trip to Poland, where he announced a deal Tuesday to sell Poland two French-made military satellites. While France has been less vocal about its military support for Ukraine than the United States and Britain, the country has sent a steady supply of weapons to Ukraine since Russia invaded on Feb. 24. France hosted two aid conferences for Ukraine this month. But many in Ukraine remain critical of Paris' response to the war

World shares mostly lower after tech-led fall on Wall Street today

Shares were mostly lower in Europe and Asia on Wednesday as markets were counting down to the end of a painful year for investors, with no end in sight to uncertainties stemming from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Shares fell in Frankfurt, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai and Seoul but rose in London and Hong Kong as the Chinese government took further steps to reopen to foreign travel after relaxing its stringent zero-COVID policies. Oil prices fell back and US futures inched higher. Not all world markets have ended the year on low notes. Britain's FTSE 100 is at about the level it started 2022. Early Wednesday it was up 0.7 per cent at 7,525.42. But most other markets have suffered as interest rate increases, waves of coronavirus infections, the war, supply chain disruptions and surging inflation took a toll on businesses and investments. Germany's DAX lost 0.3 per cent to 13,952.83. It's down about 13 per cent from the start of the year. The CAC 40 in Paris, which is about 9 per ce

Ukraine must demilitarise or Russian army will do it: Sergey Lavrov

Russia's foreign minister on Tuesday warned anew Ukraine that it must demilitarize, threatening further military action and falsely accusing Kyiv and the West of fuelling the war that started with Moscow's invasion. Sergey Lavrov said Ukraine must remove any military threat to Russia otherwise the Russian army (will) solve the issue." His comments also reflected persistent unfounded claims by the Kremlin that Ukraine and its Western allies were responsible for the 10-month war, which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions. Russia launched the war on Feb. 24, alleging a threat to its security and a plot to bring NATO to its doorstep. Lavrov reiterated on Tuesday that the West was feeding the war in Ukraine to weaken Russia, and said that it depends on Kyiv and Washington how long the conflict will last. As for the duration of the conflict, the ball is on the side of the (Kyiv) regime and Washington that stands behind its back, Lavrov told the state Tass news

Ukraine must demilitarise or Russia will do it, says Sergey Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday warned that Ukraine must meet Moscow's demand for demilitarization and denazification, as well as the removal of the military threat to Russia, otherwise the Russian army (will) solve the issue. Sergey Lavrov also accused the West of fueling the war in Ukraine to weaken Russia, and said that it depends on Kyiv and Washington how long the conflict, which started on Feb. 24 when Russia invaded Ukraine, will last. As for the duration of the conflict, the ball is on the side of the (Kyiv) regime and Washington that stands behind its back, Lavrov told the state Tass news agency. They may stop senseless resistance at any moment. Lavrov's comments come a day after Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told the Associated Press in an interview that his government wants a summit to end the war but that he doesn't anticipate Russia taking part. Kuleba said Ukraine wants a peace summit within two months with U.N. Secretary-General Antnio ..

Amid Ukraine conflict, Covid-19, India emerges as voice of Global South

India emerged as a voice of the Global South during its two-year term in the powerful UN Security Council, which acrimoniously deliberated on Russia's invasion of Ukraine that led to unprecedented levels of global food and fuel insecurity as the world continued to grapple with inequalities amplified by the pandemic. Before relinquishing its non-permanent seat in the 15-member Council on December 31, 2022, India presided over the powerful UN body in December with the country's first woman Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj sitting in the President's seat at the horse-shoe table. Just about two months into India's second year of its 2021-2022 term on the Council as elected non-permanent member, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a 'special military operation' in eastern Ukraine on February 24. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made a direct and strong appeal to Putin to stop your troops from attacking Ukraine and give peace a chance as the UN chief
