Rupee advances 22 paise to 82.08 against US dollar in early trade

The rupee appreciated 22 paise to 82.08 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, tracking positive domestic equities and an overnight fall in the dollar index. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.21 against the dollar, then gained further ground to touch 82.08, a gain of 22 paise over its previous close. On Monday, the rupee depreciated by 11 paise to close at 82.30 against the US dollar. The rupee started stronger this Tuesday, tracking an overnight fall in the dollar index, said Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities. "RBI's continued presence in the markets and oil prices have stabilised and could aid sentiments," Iyer said, adding that Asian and emerging market peers remained weak this Tuesday morning amid recessionary fears and could cap appreciation bias for the local unit. Indian Rupee has performed much better, says FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday (local time) said that Indian Rupee has performed much better than many other emerging market currencies in reference to the value of Rs dropping against the USD as geo-political tensions continue to rise.Speaking at a media briefing on her official US visit, she explained that it was not the Rs weakening rather USD was strengthening.Responding to ANI on measures being taken to tackle the slide, she said, "First of all, I will look at it, not Rupee sliding and look at it as USD strengthening incessantly. So, obviously, all other currencies are performing against the strengthening of the USD. It is a matter of fact that Indian Rupee has probably stood this USD rates going up, exchange rate in favour of the USD. Rupee's depreciation due to strengthening of dollar index: SBI chairman

The Indian rupee has weakened essentially due to the strengthening of the dollar index but it is holding well as compared to currencies of other emerging market economies, State Bank of India Chairman Dinesh Khara said. Depreciation of the rupee is a cause of concern, especially for a country which has significant imports, Khara told PTI in an interview on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank here on Friday. The rupee closed at 82.19 against the US dollar on Friday amid a firm greenback overseas and sliding crude oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 82.26 and witnessed a high of 82.12 and a low of 82.43 before settling at 82.19. Rupee depreciates 8 paise to close at 82.32 against American dollar

The rupee depreciated 8 paise to close at 82.32 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, as a firm American currency and risk-averse sentiment among investors weighed on the local unit. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 82.26 and finally settled at 82.32 against the American currency, registering a decline of 8 paise over its previous close. During the day, the local unit witnessed a high of 82.12 and a low of 82.43 against the greenback. On Thursday, the local currency had settled at 82.24 against the US dollar. The rupee was trading in a narrow range against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday, tracking a muted trend in domestic equities amid weak domestic macroeconomic data.
