Disobeying traffic rules key causes for road crashes in 2021: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police has listed "disobeying traffic rules" and "over-speeding" as two major reasons behind road accidents in the city in 2021, according to a report. While causes were mentioned for 320 fatal road accident cases, no such factor was highlighted for 886 such cases in the report prepared by the Delhi Police. According to the report, 277 fatal crashes were caused as traffic ruled were disobeyed, 213 such cases occurred due to over-speeding, five for taking sharp U-turns and three for "unguarded civil work". Faulty road engineering or design was responsible for five crashes. Two cases were caused due to the lack of a central verge on the road, two cases were due to sharp curves and one was due to the absence of road signs. Two cases were reported due to mechanical faults in vehicles -- one of the vehicles broke down and the other one was due to a tyre burst. The report further said eight crashes were reported due to poor road conditions and three such incidents occurred due

Roads in Kerala badly designed, cause of many accidents, says Rahul Gandhi

The roads in Kerala are badly designed which is why there are numerous vehicular accidents and resultant deaths in the State, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday. Gandhi said that while he was not blaming the LDF or Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for the bad designs of the roads, the State government needs to make some rules on the design. "I have a complaint. Of course, not with you (people)," is how he raised the issue of bad road designs. "I am not blaming the LDF or the Chief Minister, because some of these roads have been built by them and others by the UDF. But, when I walk on the roads, I find one half slopes one way and the other another way. Sometimes they are sharply curved," Gandhi said and added that he was not saying it in a critical way, but from his experience walking on the roads and watching the ambulances. He said lots of people are getting hurt or killed as result of the problem. Gandhi, also the MP of Wayanad, was addressing a gathering at ...

Stop sale of seat belt alarm blockers: MoRTH to consumer affairs ministry

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has written to the consumer affairs ministry to ask e-commerce companies to stop selling devices designed to disable car seat belt alarms, a senior government official said. The official said the Central Consumer Protection Authority had sent notices to e-commerce companies selling devices designed to disable car seat belt alarms based on a Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) complain in May this year. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that the government is planning to make it mandatory for automakers to introduce a seat belt alarm system for rear seats as well. His comments came after former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident on Sunday after his car hit a divider in Maharashtra's Palghar district. It appears that Mistry, who was seated in the rear with his friend Jahangir Pandole, wasn't wearing a seat belt and must have been thrown in front at great velocity as

Insurance claims independent of human errors, say industry players

The death of former Tata group chairman Cyrus Mistry in a road accident has ignited a debate over the eligibility of insurance claims in accident cases but industry players say the very purpose of buying insurance is to hedge against risk, whether due to human error or otherwise. Human error or violation of rules is unlikely to vitiate an insurance policy and accidental death claims will continue to be honoured albeit in exceptional cases the compensation amount may be lowered. Insurance documents per se do not list out acts, such as not wearing a seat belt, that could impact payment of compensation in case of death of occupants other than the driver, they said. However, most policies mention "any accidental loss or damage suffered whilst the insured or any person driving the vehicle with the knowledge and consent of the insured is under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs", the compensation amount may be limited and would vary from car make and the kind of policy taken.

Georgia pickup truck crash cases: Ford to appeal $1.7 billion verdict

Ford Motor Co. plans to appeal a USD 1.7 billion verdict against the automaker after a pickup truck crash that claimed the lives of a Georgia couple, a company representative said on Sunday. Jurors in Gwinnett County, just northeast of Atlanta, returned the verdict late last week in the yearslong civil case involving what the plaintiffs' lawyers called dangerously defective roofs on Ford pickup trucks, lawyer James Butler Jr. said on Sunday. Melvin and Voncile Hill were killed in April 2014 in the rollover wreck of their 2002 Ford F-250. Their children Kim and Adam Hill were the plaintiffs in the wrongful death case. While our sympathies go out to the Hill family, we do not believe the verdict is supported by the evidence, and we plan to appeal, Ford said in a statement to The Associated Press on Sunday. Butler said he was stunned by evidence in the case. I used to buy Ford trucks, Butler said on Sunday. I thought nobody would sell a truck with a roof this weak. The damn thing is
