RRI researchers, Isro show secure satellite-based quantum communication

Researchers at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) have successfully demonstrated secure communication established between a stationary source and a moving receiver using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). This breakthrough demonstration could pave the way for ground-to-satellite-based secure quantum communication in future, a statement issued by the RRI said on Saturday. "These results, scientists say, could help India design and provide secure communication channels, especially for defence and strategic purposes, enhance cyber security and make online transactions safer than today," the statement read. In order to achieve this feat, a team of researchers led by Prof Urbasi Sinha at the Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab deployed the indigenously developed Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) system. The PAT assisted the ground-based source in tracking the moving receiver in this case, a terrestrial vehicle, a few metres apart. The successful experimental demonstration

India lacks quality market research firms, says NR Narayana Murthy

Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy on Thursday said India lacks quality market research firms, which leads to over-estimation of the opportunity by unicorns and eventually reporting of huge losses. "One of the lacunae in India at this point in time is that we do not have a company that specialises in quality market research," Murthy said. This leads to the entrepreneurs who have created unicorns to overestimate the market opportunity and investments in venture capital funds as well, he added. Companies spend much more than what they should because of this and then wake up to reverses in the business, Murthy said while speaking at an event organised by Symbiosis International here. "...the reality sinks in at the end of the year. Your revenues have not gone up, but the expenses have gone up, with the result you make huge losses," he noted. Murthy made the point while underscoring the importance of market research during an interaction with students and said he had to shut his fi

IIT-Delhi developing Smart Monitoring System for persons working at height

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi are developing a Smart Monitoring System (SMS) to detect and alert workers about unsafe conditions while working at height. Karam Safety Private Limited (KSPL), one of the leading global fall protection companies, and FITT, an industry interface organisation at IIT Delhi, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard. "Falls from a height are one of the main causes of serious and fatal workplace accidents. Most of these accidents occur when a worker is wearing the safety gear but forgets to connect it to the anchor point either due to habit or in a hurry to complete work. In order to monitor whether the safety procedure is followed by the worker on height we have proposed an SMS," said Husain Kanchwala, Professor at Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), IIT Delhi. "If the worker has not connected the safety gear while working at height, the system will alert the user by audible warning ala

Delhi govt to study jeans dyeing, washing units' impact on environment

The Delhi government will study the environmental impact of units engaged in dyeing or washing of garments and metal surface treatment activities such as electroplating and phosphating. According to officials, effluents from such small scale units operating in non-conforming and residential areas in Delhi flow directly into the Yamuna, increasing its pollution load. Most of these units operate without permission and effluent treatment plants. Their effluents have high concentrations of ammonia and phosphates, one of the primary reasons behind the thick foam on the river water. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has called for proposals from academic institutions in this regard by February 28. According to a notice on the DPCC website, the study will ascertain how much water is being used by these units and the capacity of the treatment plants and water bodies in their areas. Activities such as dyeing or washing of jeans and other garments or metal surface treatment -- ..

GDP may print at 5.8% in Q2 due to weak manufacturing: SBI research

Citing a weak manufacturing sector coupled with the steep margin compression, SBI Research has pencilled in the country's GDP growth for the second quarter at 5.8 per cent, down 30 basis points from average estimates. The government will release the official numbers on November 30. In a report on Monday, SBI Research headed by Soumya Kanti Ghosh said corporate results, operating profit of companies, excluding banking and financial sector, degrew by 14 per cent in Q2FY23 as against 35 per cent growth in Q2FY22, though the top line continued to grow at a healthier pace. Net sales grew by 28 per cent, while bottom line was down by around 23 per cent from the year ago period. Further, corporate margin seems to be under pressure, as reflected in results of around 3,000 listed entities, excluding banking and financial sector, due to higher input costs with declining operating margins, from 17.7 per cent in Q1FY22 to 10.9 per cent in Q2FY23. Given this and the wide divergence in market ..
