The government expects to approve up to two applications this year to start building electronic chip manufacturing plants in the country, minister of state for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Friday. While speaking on the sidelines of the SemiconIndia Future Design Conference, the minister told PTI that the current situation of slowdown in the electronic chip business will not have any impact on India's semiconductor programme as the impact is cyclical in nature but the programme has been conceived with long-term vision. "The year 2023 will be an important milestone. We will cross Rs 1 lakh crore in mobile phone exports this year. We will be certainly announcing one to two fabs in India to be commencing construction," Chandrasekhar said. Digital space can't be dominated by few large cos: MoS IT Chandrasekhar

India will not allow domination of digital space by 1-2 big players and boundary conditions of openness and fair choice to users will have to be followed, IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Saturday as he outlined how the country is racing full steam ahead towards its trillion dollar digital economy goal. Addressing the Economic Times Global Business Summit 2023, the Minister agreed that time has come for clear standards to be defined for new-age technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning), and asserted that innovation cannot be a reason to escape scrutiny and accountability. The upcoming Digital India Act, which is set to replace the 22 year old IT Act (currently regulating the internet), will address this area, he said. As many as 80 crore Indians are now online, and by 2025 that number will rise to 120 crore (1.2 billion), making India the largest connected country in the world and the largest presence on the global internet. India will be .

Indian electronics manufacturing to cross Rs 1.28 trn next fiscal: MoS IT

Electronics manufacturing in the country is expected to cross Rs 1.28 lakh crore in the next financial year, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said. The minister, in an interview with PTI, said the government is now going to broaden and widen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem with a new production-linked incentive scheme for hearable-wearable, IT hardware and component makers. "Electronics manufacturing as a whole, we see next year that we will at least do Rs 1.28 lakh crore. I have already said that we will see mobile phone production reaching Rs 1 lakh crore in 2023-24," Chandrasekhar said. There has been a focus on mobile phones because it is the fastest-growing segment in electronics across the world, he added. "Value addition in manufacturing is a function of scale. First, you need to hit the scale. The component industry is the one which does value addition. Components will not come if the scale of manufacturing is not there. The next sta

Rising cost of data a concern, Meity will reach out to Trai: MoS IT

The rising prices of data and devices are a concern for the rapid proliferation of digitisation, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday. The comments have come against the backdrop of a recent hike of about 57 per cent in the minimum monthly recharge plan by the country's second-largest telco Bharti Airtel. "Rise in cost of data or cost of devices is a matter of concern because they are impediments in rapid digitisation. We have a target to bring 120 crore Indians online by 2025. We have 83 crore Indians online today. We certainly see issues in rising cost of data consumption or any rise in the cost of devices," Chandrasekhar said on the sidelines of the India Stack Developer Conference. The minister said that he has not studied the recent tariff hike in mobile services rates by Airtel and will wait for telecom regulator Trai to examine it. "We are certainly going to talk to Trai, that's what is it? Is it short-term because of the ...

He said that there has been an impact on prices across the world due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the impact of data price need to be examined. Govt will soon launch new PLI scheme for IT hardware: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

The Central government will soon launch an information technology server and IT hardware production linked incentive (PLI) scheme, and also offer additional incentives for manufacturers that incorporate Indian-designed intellectual property into their products, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Tuesday. Virtually addressing the VLSI Design Conference 2023 that began here today, Chandrasekhar said the government has announced Future Design Programme, which invests USD 200 million in startups that will design or co-design IP, tools or devices for the next generation of applications in India. "By 2024, we believe India would have stepped into the semiconductor manufacturing space and catalysed a more domestic design and innovation ecosystem where we are encouraging startups to work with the leading global majors to develop IP, to develop devices either co-owned or owned for which the government has announced Future Design Programme," he said.
