Bharat Jodo Yatra revolutionary moment for national politics: Jairam Ramesh

Congress General Secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said the Bharat Jodo Yatra is a "revolutionary moment" for national politics as well as the party and not an event, and converting it into electoral success will take a while. Addressing a press conference on the last day of the foot march's Maharashtra leg, Ramesh claimed people were looking for an alternative and wanted to get rid of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). ''The Congress is the only ideology that presents an alternative to the BJP and the RSS. The Bharat Jodo Yatra is a revolutionary moment for national politics and the Congress and not an event,'' he said. It will take a while to convert the yatra's success into the electoral success, he added. Ramesh said the yatra will take a break on November 21 and 22 in Maharashtra and will proceed to Madhya Pradesh on November 23. The party had earlier said the yatra would proceed to MP on Sunday and take a night halt i

PM targets Rahul for walking with Medha Patkar during Bharat Jodo Yatra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for walking with Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Medha Patkar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. A Congress leader was seen taking out a padyatra with a woman who stalled the Narmada dam project for three decades, Modi said, addressing a rally at Dhoraji in the poll-bound state. Ask the Congress when it comes to demand your vote that you are taking out a padyatra by keeping your hand on the shoulders of those who were against Narmada dam. What would have happened had Narmada dam not been built,Modi said. Gujarat will go to polls in two phases on December 1 and 5 with the counting of votes on December 8 along with that of Himachal Pradesh. Of the total 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat, voting for 89 seats will be held on December 1 and the balance 93 seats on December 5.

Positive energy generated due to Yatra undone by Rahul's criticism: Raut

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday claimed that the positive energy generated due to the Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra has been undone by Rahul Gandhi's criticism of freedom fighter V D Savarkar. In his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in the party mouthpiece Saamana, Rajya Sabha member Raut questioned why Gandhi was raking up issues which touch the people's emotional chord and giving the BJP a chance on a platter to divert attention. During a press conference in Maharashtra as part of his ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi recently called Savarkar a symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Gandhi had also claimed that the late Hindutva ideologue helped the British rulers and wrote a mercy petition to them out of fear, the remarks that drew criticism and triggered protests. Raut, who was recently granted bail in a money laundering case, said, ''I spent three months in jail. Many freedom fighters were lodged in the

733 lives would have been saved if Modi had spoken to farmers: Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed that had Prime Minister Narendra Modi established dialogue with the farmers who were protesting against the new agriculture laws, "733 lives" would have been saved. He was speaking at a corner meeting at Bhastan village in Maharashtra's Buldhana district during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Speaking at the end of the day's march, he paid tributes to the farmers who lost their lives while protesting against the farm laws which were withdrawn by the Union government on this day last year. The Congress observed November 19 as Kisan Vijay Diwas (Farmers' Victory Day). "Farmers are the voice of this nation. The agriculture laws were anti- farmer and hence they launched an agitation on the outskirts of Delhi, but the Modi government ignored their demands," Gandhi said. The laws were meant to help a few industrialists, he alleged. "The government has police, weapons, administration, and the farmers had only their voice. Due to the arrogance of t

Families of ones who died in farmer protests yet to be compensated: Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said even though over 700 farmers died during the stir against the now-repealed agri laws, their families are yet to get any compensation as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "reverence is only for his 2-3 friends". "733 farmers were martyred. 'Mafiveer' had to bow before the power of Satyagrah. But, the intentions did not change! "It has been one year since the black laws were withdrawn, but neither the family of any farmer who died got compensation nor any step was taken to help the farmers. Because, PM's reverence is only for his 2-3 friends," Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. Congress general secretary communications, Jairam Ramesh also said the Bharat Jodo Yatra marked this day by paying tributes to the farmers who died during the agitation. "Today's the 1st anniversary of PM's announcement that the three black farm laws were being withdrawn. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of committing a "sin" by attacking Veer Savarkar and said those who have made no contribution to the country should not question freedom fighters. It is a sin to question Savarkar's contribution, Rahul Gandhi should not do this sin," Sarma said. Interacting with media here ahead of the 400th birth anniversary legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, which will be celebrated at the national capital, he claimed that Mughals never conquered northeastern and southern India. "History needs to be rewritten because Left historians have distorted and made it appear Mughal emperors conquered entire India.
