The number of pink passes given to women travelling in state run buses has touched the 100-crore mark, an official statement said on Friday. The city government said Delhi was the first in India to initiate free travel for women on such a large scale and highlighted that 25 per cent women travelled in state run buses in 2020-21 while the figure increased to 33 per cent in 2022-23. If the ridership of Delhi buses (DTC and DIMTS combined) is to be seen, it is slowly inching back towards the pre-Covid numbers, the statement said. In 2019-20, Delhi buses had a ridership of more than 160 crore. Due to the Covid pandemic, it dropped to 71 crore in 2020-21 but recovered slightly to 93 crore in 2021-22, it said. Since April 2022 till today, it has reached nearly 125 crore, almost 75 per cent of the pre-Covid numbers. The Jammu and Kashmir government is procuring a fleet of 200 electric buses to establish environment-friendly and socially sustainable network of public transport in the Union Territory's twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar, officials said on Friday. For this, Tata Motors has been given land to build the depot whose construction has started, they said. The Jammu and Kashmir government is procuring 100 e-buses each for both the capital cities, the officials said. The electric buses will establish an environmentally, socially and financially sustainable network of public transport in the city, said Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL) Rahul Yadav who reviewed the project. He said that the electric buses will play a vital role in facilitating tourists as well as people.

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet gave its approval on Friday for developing 23 bus stations on a public-private partnership with state-of-the-art facilities on the lines of airports. The stations include two each in Lucknow, Agra and Prayagraj, besides Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Kanpur, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh said. During a meeting that was presided by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the cabinet approved the proposal to develop 23 bus stations in big cities in the first phase, Singh told the media. Later, it will be taken up in all the 75 districts of the state, he said. Hotels, restaurants, malls, toilets and separate facilities for women will be made available at these bus stations, according to Singh. It will have good seating facilities and good toilets like those at airports, he said, adding that the tenders would be floated soon.
A court here on Friday while acquitting a man of charges of assault and criminal intimidation observed that the issue of overcrowding in public transport services, especially buses, was a "recipe for disaster". Observing that the prosecution had failed to bring on record any cogent evidence to prove the guilt of the accused for the offences of assault or use of criminal force and criminal intimidation beyond a reasonable doubt, the court acquitted Ayub. The Punjab transport department on Monday said its revenue in the first six months of this fiscal is 45 per cent more than that of the corresponding period of the last financial year. In a statement issued here, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said the three wings of the department -- State Transport Commissioner, Pepsu Road Transport Corporation and Punjab Roadways -- earned Rs 1,957.64 crore from April to September in this fiscal. This is 45.07 per cent higher than the same period of the previous financial year, he said. Revenue of Rs 1,349.43 crore was collected in the corresponding period of the last fiscal. He said the increase in revenue was witnessed because of the concerted efforts of the Bhagwant Mann government to crackdown against tax evaders and operators plying buses without permits.
Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari has urged states to ensure speedy implementation of public transport tracking system under the Nirbhaya Framework, according to the minutes of the annual meeting of the Transport Development Council (TDC). Gadkari also spoke about the aspects of road safety audit and suggested that the audits can be fast-tracked by engaging professors of from polytechnics, technical institutes and young students after giving them due training about the standards.
