Passenger vehicle wholesales in India increased by 45 per cent to 2,64,442 units in July against 1,82,779 units in the same month last year, auto industry body SIAM said on Thursday. According to the latest data by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), two-wheeler dispatches from the OEMs to dealerships declined by 2 per cent to 12,53,937 units in July, compared to 12,81,354 units in the year-ago period. Motorcycle sales were at 8,37,096 units last month as against 8,88,520 units in July 2020, down 6 per cent. Scooter sales increased 10 per cent to 3,66,292 units from 3,34,288 units. Similarly, three-wheeler sales surged 41 per cent to 17,888 units last month as against 12,728 units a year ago. The total sales across categories, excluding commercial vehicles, stood at 15,36,269 units compared to 14,76,861 units in July last year.
Tata Motors on Monday said it has increased prices of its passenger vehicles by 0.8 per cent with effect from August 3. The Mumbai-based auto major, which sells models like Nexon and Harrier, will increase prices of its passenger vehicles on an average of 0.8 per cent depending on the variant and model, Tata Motors said in a statement. The company noted that it would offer protection from the price increase to vehicles that will be retailed on or before August 31. For the well-being of its business and supporting ecosystem, the company had recently announced that it has set in motion a comprehensive Business Agility Plan' to protect and serve the interests of its customers, dealers and suppliers. Last week, the automaker had noted that it is looking to increase prices of its entire range of passenger vehicles to offset the steep rise in procurement cost of essential materials like steel and precious metals. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on Thursday said it has sold a total of 40,403 units in March. The company had dispatched 6,679 units in March 2020 amid sales disruptions due to COVID-19 pandemic. The Mumbai-based automaker sold 16,700 passenger vehicles last month in the domestic market. It had dispatched 3,383 units in March 2020. It sold 21,577 commercial vehicles in the domestic market last month. The company had dispatched just 2,742 units in March 2020 due to coronavirus-led lockdown. "At Mahindra we are witnessing very good momentum in demand and have a strong pipeline of bookings across our SUV range of Bolero, Scorpio, XUV300, All-New Thar and also the Bolero Pik-up," M&M Automotive Division CEO Veejay Nakra said in a statement. Passenger vehicle wholesales in February last year stood at 2,38,622 units. As per the latest data by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), two-wheeler dispatches to dealers also rose 10.2 per cent to 14,26,865 units, compared to 12,94,787 units in February 2020. Motorcycle sales during the last month increased 11.47 per cent to 9,10,323 units as against 8,16,679 in February 2020. Scooter sales were also up 10.9 per cent at 4,64,744 units from 4,22,168 units a year ago. Three-wheeler sales, however, declined by 33.82 per cent to 27,331 units as compared with 41,300 units in February last year.
