Contempt case: Pakistan court issues show-cause notice to Imran Khan

A top court in Pakistan on Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to former prime minister Imran Khan and summoned him on August 31 in contempt proceedings initiated against him for passing controversial remarks against a female judge at a rally here. A three-member bench of the Islamabad High Court, headed by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and comprising Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, also asked Khan to personally appear before the bench on August 31. The court on Monday constituted a larger bench to initiate contempt of court proceedings against 69-year-old Khan for "threatening" Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry during his speech in Islamabad on Saturday. Pak's ex-PM Imran Khan gets three-day protective bail in terrorism case

Pakistan's ousted prime minister Imran Khan was on Monday granted protective bail till Thursday by the Islamabad High Court in a terrorism case registered against him for threatening police, judiciary and other state institutions during a rally in the national capital last week. Khan, 69, has been booked under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (punishment for acts of terrorism), according to the copy of the first information report. The case was registered at the Margalla Police Station of Islamabad on Saturday night. His lawyers - Babar Awan and Faisal Chaudhry - filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking pre-arrest bail on his behalf. A two-member bench comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Babar Sattar took up the petition.

Pak mulls taking upfront cost of CPEC projects to boost forex reserves

Pakistan is reviewing a proposal to receive upfront 20 per cent of the total cost of five China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects as deposits in the central bank in a bid to get breathing space amid declining foreign exchange reserves, a media report said on Sunday. The proposal has been discussed at the highest level as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has given instruction to further fine-tune it, a Cabinet minister told The Express Tribune. He said that at least five CPEC projects were discussed during a meeting, having a total estimated value of USD 7 billion. Under the proposal, Pakistan can receive at least USD 1.4 billion in its central bank out of the total cost of USD 7 billion. In return, these five projects that are facing years of delay will be put on the fast track for implementation. The messages received by the police threatening a 26/11-like attack in Mumbai came from a phone number which has Pakistan code, city Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar said on Saturday. He was addressing a press conference here in the wake of city police's traffic wing receiving several text messages on its helpline number, which threatened that an attack would be carried out and the city would be blown up. "Prima facie, the threat messages to blow up Mumbai like 26/11 came from a number that has Pakistan code," Phansalkar said. "We have taken the messages seriously.
