Death toll in Pakistan's Swat bombing on peace committee members rises to 8

The death toll in the blast claimed by the Pakistani Taliban in the country's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district has climbed to eight as police on Wednesday recovered three more bodies from the site where a member of the local peace committee along with four others was killed, officials said. The roadside bomb attack on Tuesday targeted the vehicle of the peace committee member Idrees Khan, an ex-Village Defence Council (Aman Committee) Chairman of Kabal Tehsil, in Swat district of the province, a police official said. The blast in the Bara Bandai area resulted in the death of Khan and seven more persons, including two police personnel, officials said. A search operation was launched on Tuesday to arrest those behind the attack, police said. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Mohammad Khurasani, claiming the responsibility of the blast, said Khan had been supporting security forces for the past several years. 6 Pakistani nationals held with drugs worth Rs 200 crore off Gujarat coast

The Gujarat Anti Terrorist Squad in a joint operation with the Indian Coast Guard seized 40 kg heroin worth Rs 200 crore from a Pakistani fishing boat in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast on Wednesday, a senior ATS official said. Six Pakistani crew members of the boat were also apprehended, he said. The fishing boat carrying drugs was intercepted mid-sea by a joint team of the Coast Guard and ATS near Jakhau harbour in Kutch district, the official said. The heroin was meant to be transported to Punjab by road after being offloaded on the Gujarat coast. Based on a specific tip- off, we intercepted the boat which left from Pakistan, and caught six Pakistani nationals with 40 kg of heroin, he said. The ATS and Coast Guard officials along with the seized boat are expected to reach the Jakhau coast later in the day, he said. The state ATS and the Coast Guard had foiled similar attempts of drug smuggling in the past also and caught foreign nationals with huge quantities of narcotics

5 die including a peace panel member in blast in Pak's Khyber Pakthtunkhwa

At least five people, including a peace committee member and two police officials, were killed in a blast in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district, officials said on Tuesday. Security officials said a roadside bomb attack targeted the vehicle of the peace committee member, Idrees Khan, who was an ex-Village Defence Council (Aman Committee) Chairman of Kabal Tehsil, in Swat district. The blast, which occurred in Bara Bandai area, resulted in the death of Khan, his security guards and two police officers, they said. A search operation has been launched to nab the culprits, police said. Not terrorist outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. US has flown 10 missions into flood-hit Pakistan with aid, says Pentagon

The US has so far flown 10 missions into Pakistan, with C-17 and C-130 aircrafts to deliver over one million pounds of critical humanitarian supplies and equipment to Pakistani people affected by flooding from deadly monsoon rains, the Pentagon has said. The Department of Defence (DOD) is in support of the US Agency for International Development's efforts to provide assistance to Pakistan in the wake of massive flooding and the humanitarian assistance crisis there. The current floods triggered by monsoon rains in Pakistan have so far killed nearly 1,400 people and injured another 12,728, while damaging 6,674 km of road and destroying over 1.7 million houses. Pakistan 'lacks effectiveness' on four goals linked to FATF: Report

The Asia-Pacific Group of the FATF, a global watchdog for terror financing and money laundering, has rated Pakistan's level of effectiveness as low' on 10 out of 11 international goals on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terror, a media report said on Tuesday. The recent cataclysmic floods that have ravaged Pakistan may have caused over USD 40 billion in economic losses and damages, according to an initial assessment.
