The Odisha government has spent Rs 261.76 crore for the construction of the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Sports Minister T K Behera informed the assembly on Thursday. He was replying to a written question from BJP legislator Subash Panigrahi. Behera said that while Rs 124.94 crore was spent from the state budget, the remaining Rs 136.82 crore was from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) fund. There was no funding from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, he said, adding the stadium was built by state PSU Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation in 15 months. It has a seating capacity for 20,011 people, he said, adding that apart from the Men's Hockey World Cup in January, Hockey Pro League was also held in the stadium from March 10-15.

Odisha's Health and Family Welfare minister Naba Kishore Das was on Sunday shot at allegedly by an assistant sub-inspector of police in Jharsuguda district, an officer said. The incident took place in Brajrajnagar town around 1 pm when the minister was on his way to attend a programme. "Assistant Sub-inspector of Police (ASI) Gopal Das opened fire at the minister, who sustained bullet injuries. The minister was then rushed to a hospital," Brajrajnagar SDPO Gupteswar Bhoi told reporters. The accused ASI was nabbed by local people, who then handed him over to the police, he said. An inquiry has been launched to find out what prompted the ASI to open fire, Bhoi said. The Odisha cabinet on Saturday approved nine piped water supply projects worth over Rs 1,287 crore in three districts, including tribal-dominated Malkangiri, in a bid to provide safe drinking water to people, an official statement said. During the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the state government gave its nod to two such projects worth Rs 254.66 crore in Jajpur and three with an outlay of Rs 393.93 crore in Nayagarh district, it said. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday urged the Odisha government to implement the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the state so that beneficiaries can avail benefits of cashless hospitalisation. Speaking to the media after participating in the 4th annual convocation of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, he said the Health Ministry has also written to the state government in this regard. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (PM-JAY) aims to achieve the target of universal health coverage and provide access to free and affordable healthcare services to the people residing in the remotest of the areas. The scheme aims to provide free and cashless healthcare services up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year to over 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families (over 53 crore beneficiaries) as per the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC)-2011 database. The AB-PMJAY is implemented in all states and Union territories barring West Bengal, NCT of Delhi and Odisha.
Over 6 lakh people belonging to poor families in Odisha availed of cashless and free treatment in several private hospitals under the state government's health scheme, Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY), in 2022, officials said. As many as 6.31 lakh poor people, having either the BSKY smart card or the PDS card, were provided high-quality and free treatment in different speciality hospitals in the private sector from January 1 to December 25 this year. The information was revealed at a recent performance review meeting chaired by Health and Family Welfare secretary Shalini Pandit, the officials said. The state government has paid around Rs 1,389 crore to the empanelled private sector hospitals towards free treatment of the poor patients, she said. BJP candidate Suryabanshi Suraj registered a lead over his BJD rival Abanti Das by 3,261 votes after the initial rounds of counting of votes for Dhamnagar bypolls in Odisha's Bhadrak district, Election Commission (EC) trends revealed on Sunday.
