Fraudster messages officials, demands gift cards in commissioner's name

Several persons in the city including junior police officials recently received a fraudulent message seeking digital gift cards "urgently" in the name of Mumbai police commissioner, an official said on Friday. The unidentified person or persons sending WhatsApp messages used police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar's photo as the display picture (DP), he said. The message asked the recipients to send 20 digital gift cards of e-commerce firm Amazon worth Rs 10,000 in total, the official said. The city police has warned its officials not to fall for the fraud, he added. Mumbai logs 832 new Covid-19 cases, 2 deaths; active tally rises to 6,269

Mumbai on Tuesday reported 832 new coronavirus cases, up from nearly 600 registered a day ago, while two more patients succumbed to the infection in the city, the local civic body said. With these additions, the overall COVID-19 tally rose to 11,39,773, while the death toll increased to 19,675, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a bulletin. The city reported 240 more cases as compared to Monday, when it added 592 patients, but no death linked to the viral infection. For the fourth consecutive day, the metropolis has logged less than 1,000 coronavirus infections. Last week, the financial capital had recorded more than 1,000 daily cases on two straight days. British luxury carmaker McLaren Automotive on Monday said it is set to enter Indian market this year with the opening of its first dealership in Mumbai in October. The Indian market would be the automaker's 41st global territory. Mumbai sees 592 new Covid cases, 27% fall from Sunday; 5,769 active cases

Mumbai on Monday reported 592 COVID-19 cases, which is 27.6 per cent lower than the addition to the tally a day earlier, and two deaths, a civic official said. Mumbai sees 818 new Covid-19 cases, one fatality in last 24 hours

Mumbai on Sunday reported 818 new coronavirus cases that raised the tally of infections to 11,38,349, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Of the 818 new cases, only 57 patients were symptomatic while the rest were asymptomatic, it said. The COVID-19 death toll rose by one to 19,673, the BMC said in a bulletin. At least 8,347 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of tests conducted so far in Mumbai to 1,80,10,697. With 881 patients recovering from the coronavirus infection during the day, the count of recoveries in the metropolis reached 11,12,915, leaving the city with 5,761 active cases. The case recovery rate in Mumbai stands at 97.8 per cent, while the overall growth rate stood at 0.072 per cent between August 14 and 20, the bulletin stated.

Fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's jailed brother Iqbal Kaskar was admitted to the government-run J J Hospital in Mumbai after complaint of chest pain, an official said on Sunday. Kaskar was rushed to the hospital on Saturday from the Taloja jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai and is undergoing treatment in the medical facility's cardiac department, the official said. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Kaskar in February this year in connection with a money laundering case. The ED had taken him in custody from the Taloja jail where he was lodged in connection with multiple extortion cases registered against him. He had later been remanded in judicial custody.

Mumbai police's traffic wing has received several text messages on its helpline number, threatening that a "26/11-like" attack will be carried out in the city by six persons and "preparations are on to blow up" the metropolis, an official said on Saturday. The police said that prima facie the number from which the messages were sent is from outside the country. Mumbai reports 1,201 new Covid cases, highest since June-end

Mumbai on Thursday reported 1,201 new coronavirus infections, highest since June 30, along with two deaths, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. On Wednesday the city had recorded 975 new infections and two pandemic-related deaths. The new cases in India's financial capital crossed the 1,000-mark for the first time after June 30 when 1,265 infections and one fatality had been reported. The cases had dipped steadily thereafter. A magistrate court here on Thursday directed Arthur Jail authorities to produce Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut before it through video conferencing in connection with a defamation complaint filed by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya's wife Medha Somaiya.
