Customs seizes 61 Kg gold worth Rs 32 crore at Mumbai airport; 7 held

Customs officials seized 61 kg of gold worth Rs 32 crore in separate operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here, making it the highest value seizure by the department at the airport in a single day, an official said on Sunday. At least seven travellers, five men and two women, were arrested in the seizures that were made on Friday, the official said. This is the highest seizure in a single day in the history of the customs at the Mumbai airport, he claimed. In the first operation, four Indians returning from Tanzania were found carrying 1 kg gold bars, which were concealed in specially-designed belts with multiple pockets, the official said. Officials recovered 53 kg of UAE-made gold bars, worth Rs 28.17 crore, from the belts that the passengers had worn around their torso, he said. Shah Rukh Khan stopped at Mumbai airport for hours over luxury watches

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and five members of his team were stopped for an hour at the Mumbai airport by Customs officials for not paying Customs duty for six luxury watches as the payment facility was not operational in the early hours of Saturday, an official said. The incident occurred at 12.30 AM after Khan landed at the airport from Dubai in a chartered flight, the official said and added that the payment counter at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) was not operational in the early hours. During the screening of the baggage of Khan and his team members, officials found six expensive watches in one of the bags, he said. The expensive watches are worth Rs 17.86 lakh as per Customs' evaluation, he said. The bag containing watches was carried by Khan's bodyguard Ravi Shankar Singh, the official said. Mumbai logs 44 new COVID-19 cases, zero fatality; active tally at 396

Mumbai on Tuesday recorded 44 new coronavirus cases that raised the tally of infections to 11,54,478, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. As per a bulletin issued by the civic body, the death toll remained unchanged at 19,741 and the count of recoveries reached 11,34,341 after 83 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours. There has been a slight rise in infections, as the city had reported 25 cases on Monday. With a positivity rate of 98.2 per cent and doubling rate of 12,014 days, the city now has 396 active cases, the bulletin said. As many as 3,769 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of tests conducted in the state to 1,84,87,127, it said.

Maharashtra govt will plan film city between Mumbai and Thane: CM Shinde

The Maharashtra government will work on planning a film city between Mumbai and Thane cities to provide a wider platform to artists, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said. Speaking at an event on Sunday where noted Marathi theatre actor Prashant Damle was felicitated for the 12,500th show of his play 'Eka Lagnachi Gosht', Shinde said the state government will support Marathi theatre and cinema. "There is a lot of shooting happening in Thane too," he said, adding that a film city will be planned between Mumbai and Thane. Thane is located 23 km from the state capital. Shinde also also said a nodal officer would be appointed to review and inspect the condition of drama auditoriums and take necessary steps to improve them. A recommendation has been forwarded to the Centre to confer the Padma award on Damle, the CM added.

Mumbai: BMC official booked for accepting Rs 50 lakh bribe, says official

A 57-year-old employee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to stop action against a company for illegal construction in the western suburb of Andheri here, an official said on Saturday. A team from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) caught an executive engineer posted at the BMC's K-east ward while accepting the bribe amount at his office on Friday, he said. The civic body had on October 13 issued a notice to the company for the illegal construction of a shed, the official said. The complainant, who is working with the company, had submitted a reply on October 19, but the accused official was not satisfied, following which the civic body initiated the action of removing the shed on October 28, he said. The accused official called the complainant to his office and allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh to stop the removal of the shed, the official said. A 132-year-old tunnel-like structure discovered under Mumbai's JJ Hospital

A 132-year-old tunnel-like structure has been found on the premises of the government-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai, officials said on Friday. The 200-metre-long structure was found under a building which originally housed the Sir Dinshaw Manockjee Petit Hospital for Women and Children. It was later converted into a nursing college. The tunnel came to light during an inspection of the building following a complaint of water leakage, officials said. The foundation stone of the British-era heritage building was laid by Lord Reay, then Governor of Bombay, on January 27, 1890, said Dr Arun Rathod, Medical Superintendent of the hospital. Hospital Dean Dr Pallavi Saple told PTI that they have apprised the Mumbai collector and Maharashtra Archaeology Department about the discovery as the building is a heritage structure. Mumbai: Technical snag delays local trains on Western Rail's fast corridor

The local services in the Western Railway's fast corridor in Mumbai were delayed for a brief period on Friday morning due to the failure of a track-changing point, an official said. There was a "point failure" (track-changing point) at Goregaon on Up and Down fast lines at 6.20 am. The problem was resolved at around 7.23 am, a spokesperson of the Western Railway said. The trains running on the fast corridor were delayed during the morning rush hour because of the technical snag, he said. "Due to this technical problem, all up and down fast suburban locals are running late by 15 to 20 minutes. Inconvenience caused is deeply regretted," the Western Railway's divisional railway manager of Mumbai division tweeted. The suburban local trains, which are termed as Mumbai's lifeline, ferry around 35 lakh commuters every day.

Mumbai suburban ridership has not reached pre-pandemic levels: CR officials

Central Railway's Mumbai suburban network has not got back pre-COVID ridership levels as yet, with work-from-home (WFH) being a possible cause, a top official said on Thursday. Rajnish Kumar Goyal, divisional railway manager of CR's Mumbai division, in an informal discussion with mediapersons here, said the number of commuters using the network was less by 7-8 lakh per day. "Presently, we are ferrying 37 lakh suburban commuters, while this figure was 45 lakh before the pandemic (that started in March 2020)," he said. BMC cancels Rs 5,800 crore tenders for road concretization in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday announced cancellation of Rs 5,800 crore-worth tenders for cement concretisation of 400 km of roads in the metropolis. New tenders will be called for speedy execution of the works by incorporating state-of-the-art technology and without compromising on quality, it said. In August 2022, the civic body had started the tendering process for concretising roads across the city to make Mumbai free of potholes. But as the five tenders received poor response, it decided to cancel the tenders, the BMC release said.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday announced 10 per cent water cut in the city from November 1 to 10, to carry out some urgent repair work at a weir in neighbouring Thane district. The civic body in an order said that the pneumatic gate system installed at Pise weir was in urgent need of repairs and the work will be carried out from November 1 to 10. A 10 per cent water cut will be imposed during the 10-day period in Mumbai Metropolitan, Thane and Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation areas, the BMC said, appealing to citizens to use water judiciously.

Mumbai records 132 new Covid-19 infections, 0 death in last 24 hours

Mumbai on Saturday recorded 132 new cases of coronavirus which raised the tally of infections in the metropolis to 11,53,860, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The death toll remained unchanged at 19,738 with no new deaths being reported. The count of recoveries reached 11,33,561. For the first time after October 22, the daily new cases in the city surged over the 100-mark. During Diwali, daily cases had dropped to as low as 32. Mumbai currently has 561 active cases. As many as 146 patients recovered from the infection since previous evening. As many as 4,994 swab samples were tested during the same period. The recovery rate stands at 98.2 per cent, while the caseload doubling rate or period is 9,803 days.

NCB files charge-sheet against Bharti Singh, her husband in 2020 drug case

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has filed a charge-sheet against comedian Bharti Singh, her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa and a drug peddler in connection with a 2020 drug case, a senior official said on Saturday. The charge-sheet, which runs into around 1,200 pages, was submitted by the NCB in a court here recently, he said. The couple was arrested by the anti-drug agency in November 2020 following the seizure of ganja (cannabis) at their residence in suburban Andheri, the official said. Both the accused were booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, including section 8 (c) (possession of drugs) and 27 (consumption of drugs), he said. During the investigation, the NCB team had arrested one more person who had played a role in the supply of the banned drug, he said.
