Continuous rains rendered the ground wet for long periods which impacted sugarcane cultivation, Sugar Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad told PTI on Saturday. "As a result, the production will be going down in Maharashtra in the ongoing season. Earlier, we estimated 138 lakh tonnes production when the crushing season started. Now, it should be around 124 lakh tonnes. We have conveyed the updated figures of production to the central government," he said. "The crushing season will be over early as compared to last year. In the last crushing season, factories worked till the start of the monsoon. Now, it will end up by April end. A total of 199 factories are currently operational in the state," the official said. MahaMetro is working on the feasibility of implementing the Metro Neo system in cities having a population of up to 20 lakh, with Nashik being a frontrunner, its managing director Brijesh Dixit said on Saturday. The 'Metro Neo' is a trolley bus system with overhead electric traction and rubber tyres, and has the capability of being upgraded to a light metro system. The Centre and the state government are viewing this development positively, he said at the foundation day programme of the MahaMetro here. He said the second phase of Nagpur Metro rail will be completed in the next five years, with work set to begin from April. A total of 1,16,542 students will take Maharashtra Board's Class 10 (SSC) exams in 332 centres across Thane district, an official said on Thursday. For the Class 12 (HSC) exams, 1,04,561 students will write their papers at 173 centres, said Manuj Jindal, chief executive officer of Thane Zilla Parishad. The SSC exams will be held from March 2 to March 25, while the HSC exams will start on February 21 and go on till March 21, he said. Flying squads will be deployed across the district to keep a check on copying and other exam-related malpractices, he said. The official said that there are no sensitive exam centres in the district.

Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) will train 39,000 real estate agents from across the state to enable them to impart better services to home and property buyers, a top official from the regulatory body said on Wednesday. MahaRERA plans to complete the training, which has been made mandatory for agents, by September, said its nodal officer Sanjay Deshmukh at a session here organised for the first batch of the property agents. Four agencies, including the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), have been entrusted with the mandatory training, which will be followed by an exam, said the official. Being the middlemen between buyers and sellers of properties, agents are expected to guide both parties in the right direction, he said.
