Maharashtra logs 1,258 Covid-19 cases, 6 deaths; active tally now 9,197

Maharashtra on Friday reported 1,258 new COVID-19 cases and six more deaths linked to the infection, which took the tally to 81,02,377 and the toll to 1,48,257, a health official said. On Thursday, the state had seen 781 cases and four deaths. Of the new cases, 678 were from the Mumbai administrative circle, followed by the Pune circle (381), Nagpur (56), Kolhapur (49), Nashik (35), Akola (16), Aurangabad (12) and the Latur circle (9). An administrative circle consists of multiple districts. All the six deaths related to coronavirus were registered in the Mumbai circle -- three in the metropolis, two in Thane and one in Mira Bhayander, he added. The recovery count increased by 1,942 in the last 24 hours to reach 79,44,923, leaving the state with an active caseload of 9,197, the official said. Will fight local polls in alliance with Shinde group: Maharashtra BJP chief

Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party president Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday said his party and the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will contest local elections in alliance. He also told reporters the alliance will emerge winners in the polls to municipal corporations, councils, urban and rural local bodies. Maharashtra focusing on solar, nuclear power generation: Dy CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday informed visiting US senator Jon Ossoff that the state is increasing the use of solar power in the agriculture sector and also focusing on nuclear energy generation, officials said. Fadnavis's statement came on the backdrop of the Union government giving in-principle nod for setting up six nuclear power reactors at Jaitapur in Maharashtra with a total capacity of 9,900 MW. Ossoff, senator from Georgia, along with a delegation led by consul general Mike Hankey met Fadnavis here, said a statement by the Maharashtra government. Fadnavis also invited US firms to invest in Maharashtra in areas like energy, agriculture technology and skill development, the release added.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde visits MNS chief Raj Thackeray's residence

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday met MNS chief Raj Thackeray at the latter's residence in central Mumbai. While an official said that Shinde called on Thackeray on the occasion of Ganesh festival, the meeting led to speculation as it came ahead of the crucial civic polls in Mumbai. Shinde met Raj Thackeray at his new residence 'Shivtirth' in Dadar. The MNS chief, who has been at loggerheads with his cousin and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray for long, had met BJP leaders last month, leading to a buzz that the saffron party may form a tie-up with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for the Mumbai polls. The BJP is currently in alliance with the Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena.

Sharad Pawar renews pitch for opposition unity for 2024 Lok Sabha polls

Amid bickering among the opposition parties, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday renewed the pitch for unity for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Interacting with reporters here after welcoming leaders from Haryana into the party fold, Pawar said the NCP was open to contesting polls as part of an opposition alliance under a common minimum programme to take on the BJP. Pawar also asked the opposition parties to keep aside differences and unite on an anti-BJP platform for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, he had said efforts were underway at the national level to bring non-BJP parties together to create a public opinion. At the same time, the NCP supremo had made it clear that he was not keen on taking up any responsibility due to his age. Pawar also accused the Narendra Modi government of failing to fulfil any of the promises made by it since 2014, including ushering in "acche din". The BJP's agenda is to keep smaller parties away from power, the NCP chief alleged.

Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 1,600 fresh coronavirus cases, while five more patients succumbed to the infection in the state, the health department said. With these additions, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 81,00,338, while the death toll increased to 1,48,247, said the department in a bulletin. On Tuesday, the state had recorded 1,444 cases and eight fatalities linked to the viral infection. Mumbai alone recorded 638 fresh cases and four fatalities, while Kolhapur district registered one death related to coronavirus, said the bulletin. The coronavirus fatality rate in the state stood at 1.83 per cent, while the recovery rate was 98.04 per cent, said the department. It said 1,864 patients recovered from the coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative count to 79,41,458 and leaving the with 10,633 active cases. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor is a flagship infrastructure project of the Narendra Modi government that seeks to improve connectivity between the country's financial capital and the commercial hub of Gujarat. Maharashtra logs 1,444 new Covid cases, 8 deaths; active tally below 11,000

Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded 1,444 fresh coronavirus cases, a rise of 634 from a day ago, while eight more patients succumbed to the infection in the state, said the health department. With these additions, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 80,98,738, while the toll increased to 1,48,242, said the department in a bulletin. Maharashtra CM says Mumbai Metro line-3 will solve problem of traffic jams

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) on Tuesday began the trial run of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line-3 at Sariput Nagar in Aarey Colony here. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis inspected the Metro train from inside and flagged off the trial run around 11 am. Shinde said it will solve the problem of traffic jams. Fadnavis termed the starting of the Metro line-3 trial as a "historic moment". He said it will be the "new lifeline of Mumbai" and when the train will be run on the entire 40 km stretch, it will be a "spiritual satisfaction" for citizens. Former Maharashtra MLC Prabhakar Sant passes away at 90 in Thane's Kalyan

Former member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Prabhakar Sant has died due to old age related ailments, family sources said on Tuesday. He was 90. Sant, who represented the teachers' constituency from Konkan between 1982 and 1988, died at his home in Kalyan town of Thane district on Monday, the sources said. During his tenure as MLC, he had set up a number of schools. He had worked for the welfare of teachers and promoted education in rural parts of the state. Sant is survived by three sons and a daughter.

The trial run of Mumbai's Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line 3 will be conducted on Tuesday at Sariput Nagar in Aarey area, an official said. Maharashtra sees 810 new Covid cases, 5 fatalities; active tally at 11,472

Maharashtra on Monday recorded 810 coronavirus cases and five fatalities, including three in Mumbai, raising the cumulative tally to 80,97,294 and the toll to 1,48,234, the state health department said. A day earlier, the state had reported 1,639 infections and five deaths due to COVID-19. Mumbai recorded 351 fresh cases. Of the five COVID-19 fatalities, three were reported from Mumbai and one each from Nagpur city and Gondia district. Maharashtra's COVID-19 fatality rate now stands at 1.73 per cent. Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday asserted that the party's annual Dussehra rally will be held at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai. The GSB Seva Mandal, one of the richest Ganesh mandals in Mumbai, has taken an insurance cover of Rs 316.40 crore for the upcoming Ganpati festival, a mandal representative said. All public liabilities and every devotee visiting the mandal is covered under the insurance, for the 10-day festivities beginning on Wednesday, said Vijay Kamath, chairman of the GSB Seva Mandal located at the Kings Circle in Mumbai. A mandal representative claimed it to be highest insurance cover taken by a mandal. As many as 326 new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Maharashtra's Thane district, taking its infection tally to 7,41,175, a health official said on Monday.
