Following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday changed his bio on Twitter where he described himself as a "Dis'Qualified MP". He also wrote "Dis'Qualified MP" on his the official Wayanad Twitter account. Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat's Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will prevent Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting elections for eight years unless a higher court stays the conviction. Over last 12 years, Naxal violence down by 77%, govt tells Lok Sabha

The Naxal violence in India has decreased by 77 per cent over the past 12 years and the number of deaths in related incidents has also reduced by 90 per cent during the same period, the government said in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said the geographical spread of LWE-related violence has significantly reduced and only 176 police stations of 45 districts reported related violence in 2022. In 2010, at least 465 police stations of 96 districts had reported LWE-related violence. Replying to a written question, Rai said the number of LWE-related deaths (security forces and civilians) has reduced from an all-time high of 1005 in 2010 to just 98 in 2022. The minister said the decline in geographical spread of violence is also reflected in the reduced number of districts covered under the security related expenditure (SRE) scheme. He said 126 districts were covered under the SRE scheme in 2010 but that number came down to 90 in April 2018 and furt

Lok Sabha members on Tuesday demanded that the government build more rehabilitation centres for drug addicts instead of sending them to jail. They also sought the construction of more sports complexes to keep youngsters away from substance abuse. Participating in a short-duration discussion in the Lok Sabha on the drug-abuse problem in India and steps taken by the government to control it, members cutting across party lines demanded that the Centre adopt a Covid-like strategy to wean the youth away from drug abuse. "Drugs have even entered schools. No one feels safe here. People are leaving the state and going abroad because of the drug menace," Akali Dal member Harsimrat Kaur Badal said. Congress member Gurjeet Singh Aujla demanded stricter law enforcement to check drug abuse and also highlighted newer routes such as Gujarat used by traffickers. "Jails are a breeding ground for drugs. It is better that small criminals and first offenders be sent to juvenile or correctional ...
