Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday inaugurated the distribution of homeopathic medicine against COVID-19 among children ahead of school reopening on November 1. Vijayan said the initiative of distributing Arsenicum Album 30 was as per the direction of the Union government's AYUSH department. "Now that students have started going to schools, they need to develop immunity. The vaccine for children is not yet ready for distribution. The effective immunity measures available in homeo medicine should be used to develop immunity among children," Vijayan said while inaugurating the distribution in an online function. The preventive tablets will be handed out through over 100 special kiosks. Vijayan said a special helpline has also been opened for all queries and district medical officers (Homeopathic) can also be contacted for clearing doubts regarding the medicine. Kerala on Sunday recorded 8,538 fresh coronavirus cases, and 363 related deaths which raised the caseload to 49,06,125 and toll to 28,592. Of the 363 deaths, 71 were reported in the last few days, 211 were those which were not confirmed until June 18 last year due to lack of adequate documentation and 81 were designated as COVID deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and Supreme Court directions, a state government release said. With 11,366 more people recovering from the virus since Saturday, the total recoveries touched 48,08,775 and the active cases dropped to 77,363, the release said. As many as 79,100 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. Among the 14 districts, Ernakulam recorded the highest with 1,481 cases, followed by Thiruvananthapuram 1,210 and Thrissur 852. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday promised his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan all support in relief and rehabilitation following loss of lives due to heavy rains and landslides. "Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi & expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to heavy rains & landslides," Bommai tweeted. He added that he has asked Karnataka Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar to be in touch with the Kerala Chief Secretary for all support in relief and rehabilitation. Bommai said "our prayers are with Kerala in this hour of crisis." A total of 39 people had lost their lives and 217 houses had been destroyed in the devastating landslides and flash floods that had occurred in the south-central districts of the state recently, Vijayan said in the Kerala Assembly. He also said that at least six people were missing and 304 rehabilitation camps were opened after the rains battered several areas of the state.
The Chief Minister also said that as many as 304 relief centres have been opened in the state.
After recording less than 10,000 COVID cases for the last few days, fresh infections jumped to 11,150 in Kerala on Wednesday which raised the total caseload to 48,70,584.
