Karnataka HC gives 15 days to fix fare for app-based auto hailing services

The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the state government to fix the fare for app-based auto-rickshaw hailing services within 15 days. The authorities last week ordered online aggregators like Uber, Rapido, and Ola to immediately stop their services for auto-rickshaws. The aggregators were also warned that action would be initiated if autos were found violating the order. The government had contended that auto-rickshaws were not covered under the license issued under the Karnataka On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregator Rules in 2016. ANI Technologies Private Limited, which is offering service through Ola app, and Uber India Systems Private Limited had challenged this before the HC in two separate petitions. Justice M G S Kamal, who heard the petitions on Thursday, suggested that the authorities and the companies arrive at a compromise and make a common submission. Even as the Karnataka government has vowed to continue the hijab ban in educational institutions till the Supreme Court gives a final verdict, Aliya Assadi, one of the girl students who started the fight for hijab at the government PU college in Udupi, says there is still hope for a fair judgement on the issue. Assadi took to Twitter to express her view on the split verdict given on the hijab issue by the Supreme Court, saying the judgement has upheld the rights of victim girls. "Hon'ble Justice Dhulia's statement has further strengthened our hope in fair judgement and continued constitutional value at least in miniscule. Karnataka: Bommai, Yediyurappa to launch Jana Sankalpa Yatra' tomorrow

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, along with the BJP stalwart B S Yediyurappa, would start Jana Sankalpa Yatra' in at least 50 Assembly constituencies in poll-bound Karnataka from Raichur on Tuesday. The yatra is coinciding with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', which would go on in the State till October 20.
