With the border row between Karnataka and Maharashtra over Belagavi still persisting, former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday accused the BJP of reaping political benefits instead of resolving the issue. In a series of tweets, the Leader of Opposition said people were facing hardship owing to the controversy. It is in the DNA of @BJP4Karnataka to reap political benefits out of controversies. Belagavi border issue, which could have been resolved through negotiations, is now allowed to grow so that BJP can take benefits, the Congress leader said. NCP slams Maha govt, BJP and Centre for 'silence' on Karnataka CM's remarks

The Nationalist Congress Party on Saturday questioned the "eerie silence" of the Maharashtra government, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Centre on the "uncalled for" statements made by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on the border dispute between the two states, which it claimed brought the differences to the fore again. Bommai had recently sought a merger of "Kannada-speaking" areas in Maharashtra's Akkalkot and Solapur and had also said some villages in Jat taluka in Sangli district wanted to join the southern state. A day earlier, he said the visit of Maharashtra ministers Chandrakant Patil and Shambhuraj Desai to Belgaum was not good in the given situation. Maharashtra and Karnataka have been involved in a long-standing border dispute, with the former seeking administrative control of Marathi-speaking Belgaum and some other villages of the neighbouring state. "'Why is an eerie silence being maintained by the Central government, BJP and CM of Maharashtra on the ...

Karnataka CM denies charges of deleting minority votes from electoral roll

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday rubbished the charge that the names of people from minority communities are being deleted from the electoral roll in the state. The Chief Minister said the Election Commission alone can add or delete names from the voters' list. "These are all lies. Already, the Election Commission has taken note of it. The deletion and addition is done by the Election Commission only," Bommai told reporters while adding that there are officers appointed by the EC for this purpose. He was responding to a query on the Congress party's allegations that the minority votes are being deleted from the electoral roll in the state. The Congress had claimed that a private trust was roped in for illegal survey of voters by posing as government officials. The party expressed its fear that the minority votes were deleted. Bommai said the state government wishes to say only one thing that the Election Commission should immediately investigate through its ...

Maha-Karnataka boundary row: Legal battle, politics keep the pot boiling

The Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute is a perennial issue that surfaces almost every year, creating an atmosphere of sharp rhetoric and sub-nationalism on both sides. With no signs of the decades-old issue getting resolved outside the court, there is a feeling in many quarters it's all politics that keeps the pot boiling. If there is no other trigger, the dispute at least crops up during December each year, when the border district of Belagavi, which Maharashtra stakes claims on, hosts the winter session of Karnataka legislature at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. This time, the dispute has come to the forefront slightly earlier, with the issue being raked up ahead of hearing on the border issue in the Supreme Court, on a suit filed by Maharashtra. Some political observers believe that the upcoming Assembly polls in Karnataka and the political dynamics in Maharashtra have added an extra twist to it this time. The border dispute dates back to 1957 after the reorganisation of states

The Chief Minister is in New Delhi and held discussions with senior advocate in the state's legal panel Mukul Rohatgi, in the wake of the case coming up before the Supreme Court for hearing on November 30.
