Over 90 airports in India to be carbon-neutral by 2024, says Scindia

Over 90 airports in the country will be carbon-neutral by 2024, while the number of airports will rise to 220 in the next five years, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Tuesday. Currently, the country has 141 airports, of which Kochi and Delhi airports are carbon-neutral, the minister said. "One of the first things that I did when I took over as the aviation minister was to put a carbon mapping profile of our airports. Two of our airports, Delhi and Kochi, are already carbon-neutral and India will have 92-93 carbon-neutral airports by 2024," Scindia said at the All India Management Association national convention. "Civil aviation is a highly visible sector, it's a very high-profile sector which attracts a lot of attention, but if you look at its contribution to green house gases and carbon emissions...its very small... two per cent of carbon emissions of the world," he said. 35 firms submit applications under PLI scheme for specialty Steel: Scindia

As many as 35 companies have submitted 79 applications under the PLI scheme for specialty steel, Union Minister of Steel Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Tuesday. The minister shared the information while speaking at the 'National Management Convention' organised by the All India Management Association (AIMA) in the national capital. "We closed all the applications two days ago and we received close to 79 applications from 35 companies. Looking at putting in place a capacity close to 28 million tonne per annum (MTPA) of new specialty steel capacity which will result in the creation of 70,000 jobs," he said. The applicants include major steel players like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, JSPL, AMNS India and SAIL, a senior steel ministry official told PTI. However, there was no proposal from any foreign entity. Govt actively studying duties levied on steel exports: Jyotiraditya Scindia

The government is actively studying the issue of export duty which was imposed on certain grades of steel in May this year. The matter is being discussed at the highest level, Union steel minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told reporters at the National Management Convention organised by the All India Management Association (AIMA) here. "This is something which is under active study by my department as well as the government. We are certainly discussing this at the highest level. When a decision is taken on this you shall be be informed," he said in reply to a question whether government is considering removing export duty on iron ore and steel intermediaries. On May 21, the government hiked the duty on exports of iron ore by up to 50 per cent and for a few steel intermediaries to 15 per cent. Aviation safety, security paramount, aggressive checks set: Scindia

Safety and security were "paramount" in the aviation sector and the civil aviation ministry had instituted a "very ambitious and aggressive" annual surveillance plan (ASP) of 3,709 checks for 2022-23, Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said here on Friday. The civil aviation minister was replying to queries from the media on recent multiple incidents of technical snags involving aircraft. "Safety and security were paramount. The primary responsibility (of aircraft safety) is with the airline and also with the regulator. The DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and the civil aviation ministry lay complete stress on safety and security," he said. Steel Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Friday said the metal sector is highly energy-intensive which causes large carbon emissions, and there is a need to adopt new technologies for attaining the zero-emission target. The iron and steel industry globally accounts for around 8 per cent of total carbon dioxide emissions on an annual basis, whereas in India, it contributes 12 per cent to the total CO2 emissions. In today's world nothing is waste and all so-called wastes can be converted into resources by adopting suitable technology, the minister stated. With the country's civil aviation space projected to see substantial growth in the coming years, the government is working to augment the manpower and capabilities of regulators DGCA and BCAS. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) takes care of the safety aspects, while the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is in charge of the security aspects in the sector. India is expected to see a total of 400 million air travellers in the next 7 to 10 years, Civil Aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Tuesday. He also said there are tremendous growth opportunities for domestic airlines and they are expected to have a fleet of 1,200 planes in five years. There were around 200 million air passengers, including domestic and international travellers, pre-pandemic and the number is expected to double to 400 million over the next 7 to 10 years, the minister said. Speaking at a conference organised by industry body Assocham, Scindia said the country is projected to have a total of 220 airports, including heliports and aerodromes, by 2026. Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Tuesday exuded confidence that India will become the number one producer of steel in the world in the days to come. India is the world's second largest producer of crude steel after China. The minister was speaking during a conference on Indian minerals and metals industry organised by NMDC and Ficci. He was of the view that India has moved from becoming the net importer of steel to the net exporter of steel. He said India's per capita consumption of steel has increased from 57.8 kg in 2013-14 to 78 kg. The government intends to achieve 300 million tonne (MT) of steel production target by 2030, Scindia said. Steel across the world is the primary sector which results in economic, capital and infrastructure growth. "Our target policy and focus also has been to turn India from just another player in the steel sector to becoming a force to reckon with," he added.

Govt plans to auction 17 non-operational mines surrendered by PSUs: Joshi

The government plans to put on auction 17 mines surrendered by public sector undertakings which could not put the blocks into operation, Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Tuesday. The statement comes in the wake of the government making efforts to ramp up domestic coal production to ensure adequate availability of dry fuel to different sectors. "Just the-day-before yesterday (Sunday) I got 17 blocks back and they are very good blocks and I am putting them for auction now," Joshi said.
