Surprising Karan Singh sidestepped Rijuju's hit job on Nehru: Jairam Ramesh

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday criticised party colleague Karan Singh for "sidestepping" Union minister Kiren Rijuju's "hit job" on Jawaharlal Nehru's role in Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India. The Congress general secretary's remarks come over an article by Karan Singh on Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India in an English daily in which Ramesh said he had defended his father and erstwhile ruler Hari Singh. Reacting to the piece, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Ramesh said on Twitter, "There is not a single scholarly and serious work on J&K that portrays Maharaja Hari Singh in good light." "Even this authoritative work by VP Menon doesn't make Hari Singh a wronged man. It is hence natural that his son Dr. Karan Singh defends him in the HT today," Ramesh said, sharing the screenshot of the cover of a book by Menon. "What I find surprising though is that Dr.Karan Singh has sidestepped Rijuju's hit job on Nehru. This the same Nehru without

Bharat Jodo Yatra to unite whom? Cong and Pandit Nehru divided India: MP CM

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday accused former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress of 'dividing' the country and wanted to know whom the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' led by Rahul Gandhi was aimed at unifying. He also expressed confidence that the BJP is going to come to power once again in Karnataka. "On one side there is Narendra Modi who is working for the country and on the other side there is Rahul baba (Rahul Gandhi) who is doing Bharat Jodo Yatra. Mr Rahul Gandhi, do tell us- who did the 'thodo' (divided) of India? In 1947 with an urge to get power at the earliest, if someone divided the country it was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress," Chouhan said. Addressing BJP's backward classes mega rally here, he said, Congress people are those who divided India, but today are talking about Bharat Jodo (unifying India). Jairam Ramesh calls Kiren Rijiju 'distorian' over the Nehru J-K debate

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said he spoke to a BJP ideologue about Union minister Kiren Rijiju's criticism of Jawaharlal Nehru on the Kashmir issue and was told that Nehru being vilified is one thing, but erstwhile ruler Hari Singh being exalted as a benevolent hero "takes the cake". Rijiju had stated that Nehru's "blunders", which included enacting Article 370 and taking the dispute with Pakistan to the United Nations, caused much tragedy, drained the country's resources and cost thousands of lives of soldiers and civilians in militancy. "I spoke to a BJP ideologue this morning about Kiren Rijiju, the latest entrant to the club of Distorians," Ramesh said in a tweet. "He (the BJP idealogue) sent me the following message: The strange thing is, Nehru being vilified is one thing, Hari Singh being exalted as some sort of upright & benevolent hero takes the cake," the senior Congress leader said without naming the "BJP ideologue". Hari Singh was the last ruling ...

Nehru made 'blunders' on Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi corrected them: BJP

The BJP on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi corrected "blunders" of Jawaharlal Nehru related to Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India by nullifying Article 370 and demanded an apology from the Congress. Addressing a press conference on the 75th anniversary of the region's accession, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that the first prime minister committed five blunders, including delaying action on the accession proposal of the region's king Hari Singh. Jammu and Kashmir, and the country in general had to pay a price for it while this allowed Pakistan to capture a part of the region (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir), he said. Bhatia quoted from Nehru's statement to assert that the king had first mooted the idea in July 1947 but the then prime minister dithered and allegedly prioritised his and his friend's interests, a reference to Sheikh Abdullah, while neglecting the country's. Hitting out at the Congress, he said, "If a timely action was taken, then there would be no p

PM Modi launches veiled attack on Jawaharlal Nehru over Kashmir issue

Sardar Patel resolved issues of merger of other princely states, but one person could not resolve the Kashmir issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, in a veiled attack on Pandit Nehru. Addressing a rally here ahead of Gujarat Assembly elections due this year-end, Modi also said has was able to resolve the long-pending Kashmir issue as he is walking in the footsteps of Sardar Patel. Sardar saheb persuaded all the princely states to merge with India. But another person handled this one issue of Kashmir, Modi said, without naming India's first prime minister. As I am following the footsteps of Sardar saheb, I have values of the land of Sardar and that was the reason I resolved the problem of Kashmir and paid true tributes to Sardar Patel, Modi said.
