About 40 per cent villages in the country have been declared ODF-plus till now, with 33 per cent villages achieving the status in the last one year, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Friday. In the next financial year, the target is to bring more than 50,000 villages in the ODF-plus category, he told reporters. The top performing states are Telangana (100 per cent), Tamil Nadu (95 per cent) and Karnataka (93.5 per cent), the minister said. The ODF-plus status is given to states that sustain their open defecation free status, ensure solid and liquid waste management, and are visually clean. Among the fast growing states are Himachal Pradesh that grew from 18 per cent in April 1 last year to 80 per cent by March 31, Madhya Pradesh from six per cent to 62 per cent in the same period and Uttar Pradesh from 2 per cent to nearly 50 per cent, Shekhawat said. As many as 11.49 crore households now have tap water connections and over 1.53 lakh villages have potable water supply as the government doubles down on its efforts to make drinking water available to all, according to latest official data. The data as of March 21 showed massive jumps in piped water supply to schools, anganwadi centres and aspirational districts after the government allocated Rs 70,000 crore for the purpose in the current financial year ending March 31, (2022-23). This was 12 times more than the Rs 5,500 crore allotted in 2018-19. The statistics came on a day that is marked as World Water Day with the UN World Water Development Report 2023 saying 26 per cent of the world's population do not have access to safe drinking water and 46 per cent lack access to basic sanitation. More than 7.81 crore rural households have been provided tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission over last three years, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Prahlad Singh Patel informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. In a written reply to a question, the minister said as on January 31, 2023, out of 19.36 crore rural households in the country, around 11.06 crore (57.12 per cent) are reported to have tap water supply. At the time of the announcement of JJM, 3.23 crore (17 per cent) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. Goa, Telangana, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Gujarat and Haryana are among the states and Union Territories which have provided tap water to every rural household. The central government, in partnership with the states, is implementing the JJM since August 2019 to make tap water supply available to every rural household in the country. Clean tap water connections to over 10 crore rural households and open defecation free-plus status for 1.42 lakh villages were among some key achievements for the Jal Shakti Ministry this year. While rural households in seven states and Union territories had 100 per cent coverage of tap water connection, as many as 10 states and Union territories had less than 50 per cent coverage. Jharkhand (24 per cent) and Lakshadweep (0 per cent) had lowest coverage in the country. In 2022, as many as 2,12,38,629 households got clean water tap connections bringing the total number of such rural households to 10,78,51,019. Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday stressed the need to reuse and recycle water in order to become 'aatmanirbhar' or self-sufficient in its supply. Speaking at the 'Har Ghar Jal Utsav' programme organised by the Goa government to mark 100 per cent piped water supply coverage in rural households of the state, the minister also called for harvesting rainwater. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the event via video conferencing. "We should work on reusing and recycling water to become 'aatmanirbhar' in its supply," Shekhawat said. On the occasion, he remembered the freedom fighters who fought for the country's independence and for the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule.
