Yashwant Sinha, the joint nominee of non-BJP parties for presidential polls, arrived in Ranchi on Friday to seek support of legislators and parliamentarians over his candidature. Former BJP councillor Manoj Kuthiala joined the Congress along with his wife Shubha here on Friday in the presence of state party president Pratibha Singh. Shimla rural MLA Vikramaditya Singh was also present on the occasion. Kuthiala and his wife joined the Congress at their residence, Holly Lodge, in Lower Jakhu. Later, Kuthiala told reporters that he was with the BJP for the last 30 years. He decided to join the Congress as he was being ignored in the BJP for some time, he said. Kuthiala was elected as a councillor in 2007 and 2012 from Jakhu ward number 16. However, the Jakhu ward was reserved for women in 2017. He said if the Congress asks any woman from his family to contest the upcoming municipal corporation elections, they would abide by the party decision.

Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday said that if he is elected, he will ensure that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not implemented. Interacting with opposition lawmakers of Assam, Sinha said the BJP-led government has not been able to implement the CAA so far as it was "foolishly drafted" in a hurry. "Citizenship is a major issue for Assam, and the government wanted to bring in the Act across the country but has not been able to do so yet," he said. "Earlier, the government gave the excuse of COVID, but even now they have not been able to implement it because it is an Act foolishly drafted in a hurry," he added. Sinha alleged that the Constitution was in danger not from any outside force, but from those in power. "This presidential election is of special significance as it is a fight to save Constitution," he asserted. "If I am in Rashtrapati Bhavan, I will ensure that CAA is not implemented," he said.
