Indian media strong enough to set narrative across world: Anurag Thakur

Union minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said the Indian media is strong enough and has the capability to set narrative across the world. He alleged that some foreign media houses carried "false" reports about India during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this agenda of spoiling the country's image was not only being run from outside the country, but many Indian leaders used that opportunity for their self-interests. The Information and Broadcasting Minister also said that Indian media was independent in the past and will remain so in the future as it is today. Thakur was speaking at the Lokmat National Media Conclave on the topic 'Is Indian Media Completely Polarised?' The media conclave was organised to mark the birth centenary of freedom fighter and Lokmat Media Group's founder editor Jawaharlal Darda, fondly known as 'Babuji', as well as the golden jubilee of the Lokmat Nagpur edition. Addressing a gathering of journalists and intellectuals, the minister said, "On the part of the ...

Thakur cautions media against narratives that threaten India's integrity

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday urged the media fraternity in the country to remain cautious and desist from giving its space to narratives that threaten the nation's integrity. Substandard and illogical opinions, delivered freely from within or abroad, could not destroy the democratic nature of the country, he added. "I urge the media fraternity to remain cautious and desist from giving its space intentionally or unintentionally to such voices and narratives that have the potential to threaten the integrity of India," he said. The minister was speaking while participating as a special guest in the centenary celebrations of eminent Malayalam daily "Mathrubhumi". He said there is a proverb that facts are sacred and opinion is free. "I want to emphasise here that the democratic nature of our great nation will always remain a fact, no matter how many substandard and illogical opinions are delivered freely from within or abroad," Thakur added.

Surprised by priorities of media's prime time debates: Mehbooba Mufti

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday hit out at the media, saying instead of covering real problems, it was wasting time by discussing non-issues such as the Jammu and Kashmir administration issuing an eviction notice to her. The administration had earlier this week issued an eviction notice to the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, saying she was not entitled to use the bungalow on the high security Gupkar Road. "The media is wasting time in discussing non-issues like Mehboba Mufti vacating the house. Ideally, they should focus on real issues and problems faced by people (of Jammu and Kashmir) but they are not doing that," the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader told reporters after paying obeisance at her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's grave in Anantnag district. Mehbooba also said that seizing of passport, questioning by the Enforcement Directorate or eviction notices do not surprise her. "If anything surprises me, it is the priorities of (the visual) media," she ...

Media firm TV18 Broadcast Ltd on Tuesday reported a 95.55 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit to Rs 10.28 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2022. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 231.40 crore for the July-September period of the previous fiscal, TV18 Broadcast said in a regulatory filing.
