Indian men's football team will be looking to move closer to an AFC Asian Cup 2023 berth when they take on wounded Afghanistan at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday.The Blue Tigers are currently sitting at the top of the points table in Group D after their win over Cambodia in their first match while Anoush Dastgir's men who faced a defeat against Hong Kong in their first match need a win to stay in contention for an AFC Asian Cup berth.Currently ranked 150th in the FIFA rankings, Afghanistan had only participated in the 1948 Olympics and played a 1984 AFC Asian Cup qualifying game in which they were able to score against Jordan but lost the match by 6-1. They finished last in their group.Their first big international tournament was back in 2003, which was SAFF Gold Cup where they failed to win a single match. Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri is expecting a tough outing in their two upcoming friendly internationals against Nepal. India are scheduled to play Nepal on September 2 and September 5 in two away games. "This is an excellent opportunity for us to improve as a team. Given the current circumstances, it wasn't easy to get a friendly game," Chhetri told the All India Football Federation. "The Nepal federation and government invited us to play, and we thank them for the opportunity and the gesture. "Nepal are a very tough side, especially when they play against us, and we are aware of the extreme challenge the two matches present us," he added. Other than Chhetri, Pritam Kotal and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, none of the players of the current team have been to Nepal with the senior side. Stimac 'may consider' releasing Jhingan for club football in Croatia

Indian men's team coach Igor Stimac on Tuesday said he "may consider" releasing his premier defender Sandesh Jhingan from national commitments to play club football in Croatia. Referring to Jhingan's move to Croatia to play league Football, Stimac said: "Having in mind that the Croatian league has already had five rounds, and the players are fit, we are thinking as to how we can help Sandesh get into form as soon as possible, and also try to facilitate him get his place in the team. "It's important for him to get into the playing XI. So we may consider releasing him from the camp and bringing him back but allow him to stay with the club." Stimac had coached Croatia to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
