UGC new draft norms: UG 'honours' degree only after completing 4 years

Students will be able to get an undergraduate 'honours' degree only after completing four years instead of three, according to new draft norms prepared by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The draft -- 'curriculum and credit framework for four-year undergraduate programmes' prepared in accordance with National Education Policy -- is likely to be notified on Monday. "Students will be able to get a UG degree in three years on completion of 120 credits (measured through the number of academic hours) and a UG honours degree in four years on completion of 160 credits. "If they wish to go for a research specialisation, they will have to undertake a research project in their four-year course. This will get them an Honours degree with research specialisation," the draft read. India, which facilitated the safe return of its 22,500 nationals, most of them students, from Ukraine amid the conflict, is exploring options to minimise the impact on its students' education, the country's envoy here told a UN Security Council briefing. Speaking at the briefing titled Ukraine: Protection of civilians and the situation of children' on Tuesday, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said the conflict in Ukraine is severely impacting the 7.5 million children across the country. Kamboj, the President of the Security Council for the month of December, said in her remarks that the international community must not forget that the situation in Ukraine has also affected foreign students, including those from India. DU admission: Over 6,000 candidates accept allotted seats in 1st spot round

More than 6,000 candidates have accepted the seats allotted to them in the first spot round of admission to undergraduate programmes at Delhi University, a varsity official said. Over 8,680 students have been allotted seats in the first round of spot seat allocation. So far, 349 have confirmed their admission by submitting fees. "Out of 8,682 students allocated seats in the first spot round, 6,030 have accepted the seat," the official said. The candidates can accept the allocated seats till Friday. Under the spot round of seat allocation which started on November 20, more than 26,200 candidates have applied for around 14,000 vacant seats in undergraduate courses in DU colleges. Unlike regular Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) rounds, seats allocated in a spot admission round will be final. They will not be upgraded in any subsequent round of the spot admission system. Education is not a business to earn profit and tuition fees shall always be affordable, the Supreme Court has said while upholding the Andhra Pradesh High Court order quashing the state government's decision to enhance the tuition fee in medical colleges to Rs 24 lakh per annum. A bench of Justices M R Shah and Sudhanshu Dhulia imposed a cost of Rs 5 lakh on the petitioner, Narayana Medical College, and Andhra Pradesh to be deposited with the court registry within a period of six weeks. "To enhance the fee to Rs 24 lakh per annum i.e., seven times more than the fee fixed earlier was not justifiable at all. Education is not the business to earn profit. The tuition fee shall always be affordable," the bench said. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday said India is set to become a "Vishwa Guru" again as he stressed on the need for right education and thinking.
