Calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and violence in Ukraine, India reaffirmed that it advocates dialogue and diplomacy to end the Russia-Ukraine war and mitigate economic challenges emerging from the conflict, particularly in the developing countries. India set to have 180k km highways, 120k km rail lines by 2025: Report

The country is on course to build more national highways and rail lines during the decade ending 2025 than it has cumulatively done between 1950 and 2015, a report said on Wednesday. The total length of national highways is expected to reach 1.8 lakh kilometres, while that of the railway lines 1.2 lakh kilometres by 2025, Bank of America Securities India said in a report. Between 1950 and 2015, the nation built only 4,000 kilometres of national highways, taking the total length to 77,000 kilometres in 2015. However the highway length is on course to cross 1.8 lakh kilometres by 2025 -- more than double the existing length -- in ten years time. When it comes to the rail network, the nation had only 10,000 kilometres of rail lines in 1950, which rose to 63,000 kilometres in 2015. But it is slated to touch 1.2 lakh kilometres in 2025, the report said. The port capacity which was only 777 MTPA in 1995 rose to 1,911 MTPA in 2015 and is on course to more than double to 3,000 MTPA by 2025

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Tuesday exuded confidence that India will become the number one producer of steel in the world in the days to come. India is the world's second largest producer of crude steel after China. The minister was speaking during a conference on Indian minerals and metals industry organised by NMDC and Ficci. He was of the view that India has moved from becoming the net importer of steel to the net exporter of steel. He said India's per capita consumption of steel has increased from 57.8 kg in 2013-14 to 78 kg. The government intends to achieve 300 million tonne (MT) of steel production target by 2030, Scindia said. India's crude oil production falls 3.8% to 2.45 MT in July: Govt data

India's crude oil production fell 3.8 per cent in July on lower output from fields operated by state-owned ONGC and private sector firms, government data released on Tuesday showed. Production of crude oil, which is refined to produce fuels such as petrol and diesel, fell to 2.45 million tonnes in July from 2.54 million tonnes a year back. The output was lower than the monthly target of 2.59 million tonnes, the data released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas showed. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) produced 1.7 per cent less oil at 1.63 million tonnes on lower output from western offshore. Fields operated by private firms saw a 12.34 per cent decline in production. But the oil production during the first four months of the current fiscal that began on April 1 was only marginally lower at 9.91 million tonnes as opposed to 9.96 million tonnes during April-July 2021. 15 Chinese nationals staying illegally in India detained by UP police

Fifteen Chinese nationals, including a woman, staying without valid visas in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar were detained on Monday by the local police, officials said. "As part of the verification campaign, 15 Chinese nationals staying illegally in Gautam Buddh Nagar were detained by the Local Intelligence Unit with support of local police on Monday. They are being sent to the detention centre in Delhi and will be subsequently deported to their country," the police said in a statement.

India on Monday handed over 21,000 tonnes of fertiliser to Sri Lanka under a special support programme which will help farmers in this country and help bolster bilateral cooperation for food security, the second such assistance in recent months to the crisis-hit island nation. "Adding to the fragrance of friendship and cooperation. High Commissioner (Gopal Baglay) formally handed over 21,000 tonnes of fertiliser supplied under India's special support to the people of Sri Lanka," the Indian High Commission said in a tweet.
